The Diggup Tapes crew return with another night of free rock 'n roll at Kings Barcade tonight (Friday, January 27th). Tonight features a handful of low-fi rock bands with lots of punch. We'd reconmmend not missing this combination of bands who are sure to blow ear drums and speakers alike.

All said, that Whatever Brains can consider themselves kissing cousins with one of the most respected and venerated indie-rock institutions still working today shouldn't come as a surprise.  Nor should it be any sort of shock that Matador Records wanted to distribute their "Mt. Whatever" / "Summer Jammin'" single—both of those A-sides (the former, snotty & raucous; the latter, drunk & woozy) offer the sort of awkward pop charms that, from Pavement to the late Jay Reatard, gave the label its well-deserved reputation.

Night Creepers (Columbus, OH)

via Impose

When Aaron Troyer is not playing with his Day Creeper amigos, he drops a few letters to become Day Creep. His Underneath The Mess tape was recorded over the duration of what was likely a brutal Ohio winter in Columbus. It resulted in songs like "Looming Catastrophe" that place similar values on the impending Armageddon and a lack of beer. The remainder of the tape finds Troyer musing of acid rain and ghosts with a few "rejected" jams that give Underneath The Mess a bit of a small operations version of Slanted & Enchanted vibe.

The Toddlers (Chapel Hill, NC)

Members of Wild Wild Geese & Love Language

The Toddlers are Noah Dehmer, Ellis Anderson, Missy Thangs and Nathan Toben playing music simultaneously. Their hearts evacuate ribbons of song in the same way that  tailors hem clothes that make everybody look so good. When not playing their neo-noir music, The Toddlers busy themselves with wondering why America will never stop listening to their music.
