Old or new, grungy or grand, Garden and Gun lists the South’s choicest places to order up a round and unwind and one of Raleigh's newest bars, Fox Liquor Bar, makes the cut under cocktail bars. Ashley Christensen opened opened Fox back in September and quickly became a new underground hangout for lots of downtowners looking for a dark bar with great (although some would say pricey) drinks. After tapping six bars on the Draft Magazine's Best Beer Bars in the South, it's nice to see Raleigh getting some cocktail love. I'd argue that Foundation could have been tapped under Whiskey Bars, but hey.

Other bars in North Carolina to make the list are The Cave in Chapel Hill, under the Dog-Friendly Bars category, the Thirsty Monk in Asheville under Draft Houses and The Backstreet Pub in Beaufort, North Carolina under Vintage Bars. Crunkleton in Chapel Hill also got an honorable mention.

This underground cocktail club is the late-night soul of Ashley Christensen’s new triple-
restaurant project, housed in the shell of a former downtown Piggly Wiggly. To craft the ambitious menu of specialty drinks, the Poole’s Diner chef-owner imported New York mix master Karin Stanley, whose evolving plans include cocktail kegs for soda fountain–style tipples on tap. ac-restaurants.com/fox

I’d argue a lot of bars open more than six months might deserve this accolade.

That is a great magazine.  Been to Fox twice now.  Good atmosphere but too slow, expensive and the drinks are just ok.  I would argue that Pooles even has better coctails.  An in Cary has the best coctails around.

Unless you have a mustache, skinny jeans and a chain wallet don’t bother going. You pay 11 dollars for glasses filled with fancy ice!

    Say Mayor.
    They weren’t open in 1999.
