The Lorax is somewhat of a buried treasure in Dr. Seuss’ career. First published in 1971, it was Seuss’ fictional chronicle of how quickly an industrialized society can damage the environment around it. An animated special based on the book aired in 1972, and while you may find it being played on a station desperate for cheap programming from time to time, it hasn’t proven to be as timeless as several other adaptations more beloved by Seuss fans.
With the history of the property out of the way, let’s focus on Universal’s new theatrical release based on The Lorax. This animated adaptation looks really, really good. The trailers have been screening for a few months now, and it never fails to cause the audience to get excited for the release.
Universal’s The Lorax stars the voice talent of Zac Efron (Hairspray) as Ted, a boy who goes on a journey to figure out why he has never seen a tree in his entire life. That journey leads him to the Once-ler (voiced by Ed Helms), a former businessman now living as a shut-in at the top of his abandoned factory. The Once-ler recounts the tale of what was once the beautiful forest of Truffula, and the mysterious creature known only as the Lorax (voiced by Danny DeVito).
Universal is holding a special advanced screening of The Lorax on Saturday, February 25th, at 10am, and New Raleigh has your chance at winning passes to this event.
