101 Lounge Wall Design Charette

Early morning, November 14th, before opening for business on a rainy morning, a van ran a red light at the corner of Davie and Blount, hit another vehicle and slid into the exterior wall in front of 101 Lounge + Café. Thankfully, no one was seriously injured and day to day business began at 7am with little disruption. Demolition for some, opportunity for others…

After reviewing the wall and the possibilities of what could be, focus turned to the reconstruction. The owners of 101 Lounge + Café did not want to rebuild just a wall; They wanted to build a corner of downtown Raleigh that would reflect the new direction of downtown, Vernacular Studio’s AIA award winning architecture that was inside and J Davis’s architecture of Palladium Plaza. The corner of Davie and Blount, nestled across from ArtSpace and City Market, is a future downtown corner that should appeal to residents, commuters and visitors of downtown Raleigh.

The goal of this project is to gather ideas and rebuild the exterior corner of Davie and Blount Street, within city guidelines, to reflect the interior architecture of 101 Lounge + Café and the exterior design of Palladium Plaza. The design should include a wall that is functional and optimizes outdoor seating space with the wall. Along with the wall design, exterior signage and potential use of an awning that will maximize the visibility of the two story lounge, café and corner bar should be taken into consideration.

Please review the attached drawings with exterior dimensions and the photographs of the corner of Davie and Blount. It is preferred that all design mockups be submitted using the pictures attached or a 3-D Modeling program.

An open house brainstorming meeting has tentatively been scheduled at 101 Lounge + Café on Thursday, January 22 at 7pm to review potential designs and discuss the project further. This meeting date and time will be confirmed shortly. Expectations are to gather enough information and have the Corner of Davie and Blount Street built by the end of February.

How much are they paying for the winning design?

Seems like they should have thought of that before they put that boring building there.  I hope the new design includes some bollards at the curb to prevent any casualties.

I agree with smitty.  I also think it would be useful to identify other locations where bollards could prevent injury at high-speed intersections where people congregate—e.g. the borough.

I interpret the original post as asking for suggestions for improvement. An opportunity to upgrade this corner has presented itself. There is no point in debating what was already designed by J Davis. Obviously, they want to enhance it and are looking for our feedback or suggestions. Instead of negative comments, maybe we should applaud them for wanting something that is a better fit for the revitalization of downtown. I personally would like to see a table top built into the replacement wall with access to the front door from either side. The green fence and railing were awful, I’m glad their gone.

sorry if i sounded negative—i am in agreement about the bollard comment!  i think it’s awesome that they are asking for creative feedback for the replacement design.

Has anyone else noticed the bollard advertisements that showed up on this blog?  Coincidence?

    Not a coincidence.  Google analytics.

I think they should install a table top bar design as said before, facing Davie and Blount with mounted water guns.  They could shoot recycled water for sustainability of course.

    smitty,

are you referring to Palladium Plaza as “that boring building”?  please submit a photo of the shitty apartment you rent for comparison.  perhaps you and stephanie can get jobs with the city and implement all your safety ideas.

If 101 had the watergun wall Smitty, Stephanie and Clark could battle this out over a spritzer and a super soaker showdown.  Then they could all walk a block down to the Barkery for home made treats for the four legged friends at home.

Clark—Your wish has been granted.  I currently participate in CAMPO’s Bicycle and Pedestrian Stakeholder’s Group (BPSG) and would be happy to offer bollards as a consideration for a recommended safety design standard.  I really love this building b/c the apartment entrances have stoops that face the sidewalk—a welcome change to downtown streetscapes!

    steph,

you are alright.  not sure if the 101 guys had thought of bollards, perhaps you and smitt-tastic are on to something.  also, i didn’t know those things were called bollards.  never had a reason i guess.  glad you like the building. i am also a fan. smitt-dog not so much evidently.
