1974 Wolfpack:  Best ACC Basketball team ever

The sports crew at WRAL, with the help of its readers, have chosen the 1974 Wolfpack Men’s Basketball Team as the best team to ever come out of the ACC.  The brackets were filled with many noteworthy ACC teams.  The initial bracket, dubbed “The Sweetest 16”, was picked by WRAL.  It was up to the fans to decide who was the best.  After the daily eliminations started on Tuesday, the week has been approaching the final confrontation between the two best teams in ACC history.  After all the close voting and computer glitches (one computer voted 10,000 times, throwing much of the bracket out of whack) were settled, the 1974 NC State Men’s Basketball Team were #1.

It’s a bittersweet notion, given State’s less than wonderful performance this past season.  But then, history always repeats, so the saying goes.  Maybe one day we’ll be graced with another 4 foot vertical-leapin’ wonder.  AP and Basketball Writers National Coach of the Year Norm Sloan led a talented squad, fronted by David Thompson, the only player at NC State to have his jersery retired.  They ended the 7 year run by UCLA, coached by the legendary John Wooden.

Dane Huffman blogged about his experience of the 1974 team.

Stay tuned for November.
