Over the last few weeks of 2009, we’ll present to you some of the best, the most, the worst, and the weirdest of things that came across the plate of New Raleigh in the year 2009.

Oddities ruled this year with The Slammer, once again, being the most read article of the year, barely beating out the Cameron Village Sewer Blob, Angry Man, Barrel Monster and ECU’s “Logo Change”. The Most Commented articles bounced between various subjects like The Smoking Debate to the New NCMA Logo to H&M Choosing Crabtree Mall to Raleigh Everyman and more. Critics galore.

Lots of restaurants and bars opened while a handful shut their doors. Buildings went up, were renovated and a few came down. A lot of freshman musicians made their mark on the local scene and a lot of sophomore names hit it big on the national scale. And the downtown amphitheater finally moved forward.

Raleigh’s downtown made a bit of progress on the civic level, adding a handful of useful public amenities (R-Line, City Plaza, Wifi), while taking away others (no more free parking, smoking in bars and dogs on restaurant patios). Hillsborough Street is now torn up from NC State to the Capitol Building while Fayetteville Street was completed from The Progress Energy Performing Arts Center to the Capitol Building.

If nothing else, 2009 was a year full of changes for the capital city. So stay tuned as we recap the year that was 2009 on New Raleigh. We’ll start with Music and not really sure where we’ll end. We hope you enjoy.
