Rebus Works is pleased to announce 21st Century Ceramics:  A Conversation with Charlotte Vestal Brown and Meredith Brickell, which concludes the exhibits, when I go swimming and Via Penland.  This special discussion willl be held Saturday, January 26, at Rebus Works.

Dr. Charlotte V. Brown, director of the Gregg Museum, will begin the lecture discussing the history of NC pottery and contemporary ceramics.  Meredith Brickell will talk about her journey from the NCSU School of Design to Penland to grad school and back to Raleigh.  Following this, Brown will ask Brickell questions about her work and life as a studio artist.  Finally, the event will conclude with an open question and answer.

Dr. Brown is the author of the recent book, Remarkable Potters of Seagrove: The Folk Pottery of a Legendary Community.  She has led the Gregg Museum (formerly the Gallery of Art and Design) since 1982, and has received an honorary membership in the American Institute of Architects for her research and service.  The Gregg Museum, at North Carolina State University is an early collector of Brickell’s work.

Meredith Brickell holds a Master of Fine Arts in Ceramics from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.  She was a Core student at Penland School of Crafts from 2000-2002, and received a Bachelor of Art + Design from North Carolina State University.  Brickell works in clay, creating hand-built vessels.  The vessels are often large, but are experienced intimately, as tiny details—fine lines, swatches of metallic gold, hidden drawings on a vessel’s underside—draw one into the entire landscape of the form.  Widely collected, Brickell continues to exhibit locally and nationally.
