Kirby Derby is this saturday! Just a reminder for anyone who has been in the past, and also a little info for anyone that hasn’t. The annual Kirby Derby is a home-grown event on Kirby St. near Dorthea Dix campus. Each year paraders enter themed floats, vehicles, bikes, or their costumed-selves into the parade. Anything goes as long as it’s safe and reasonably appropriate.

This Saturday, June 21 will be the 2008 Kirby Derby Day. This year’s theme is titled, “What Happens on Kirby Stays on Kirby.“ The afternoon kicks off with kids games and a DJ and then slides into the parade, “drag” races, derby, and afterparty.

After the parade is the Drag Race. For this speed-walking race men are required to wear 2” high minimum heels and women must wear loosely laced boots atleast 5 sizes too big.
The third event is the downhill derby race. Racers will be navigating homemade vehicles from the top of Kirby St. through Dead Man’s Curve and on towards the bottom of the hill.
The event is a family and community oriented, loose knit event of fantastic costumes, minor mayhem, and celebration during the solstice.

Visit the Kirby Derby website for more info and some great pictures from past years.
