Durham's 9th Wonder is probably the most important musician working in North Carolina today.  Born in Winston Salem with the name, Patrick Douthit, 9th has produced tracks for Jay-Z, Mary J Blige, Drake and Ludacris; and continues to be absolutely prolific in his production.  His record label has 9 artists, including Raleigh's Rapsody, King Mez, and Halo who are regularly cranking out mix tapes, albums and videos.  On top of this Douthit is a leading intellectual in hip-hop, formerly teaching at NC Central and now a Duke University professor teaching a course called "Sampling Soul."

Over the last two years Douthit has worked with Raleigh born director Kenneth Price.  Price is an Enloe High graduate and went on to complete his masters in film this year at UNC Greensboro. Together the two creatives have built a huge library of music videos for 9 Wonder's Jamla records and a new documentary called The Wonder Year chronicling 9th Wonder's 2010. The movie captures 9th Wonder's production process and some the inspiration for his work along with commentary from collaborators like Drake.  Other notable moments include the reunion with Phonte, 9th's former partner in the group Little Brother.

Tuesday night you can see Price's documentary at King's, free of charge.  The duo has been touring North America sharing the story and talking about their collaboration. In addition to the screening there will be a Q &A with 9th Wonder and Kennenth Price. An after party/album release party for 9th Wonder's new album The Wonder Years and Phonte's new album Charity Starts at Home  with 9th Wonder DJing and Phonte in attendence at Five Star.  Tuesday is also the release day for both 9th Wonder and Phonte's new discs. It all starts at King's at 8pm. See the film's website.

See some of our favorite collaborations between the two below and see Price's full library (there is an incredible 34 videos) of music videos here.
