A Raleigh Tradition Since 1788: Planning around Booze

Few people realize how prominently pubs and bars figure into our City’s history. In fact, it could be said that while most cities back then were founded by convenience to waterways, the City of Raleigh was founded by its convenience to “watering holes”.

In 1788, a commission of the State legislature selected this area as the site for a new State Capital based almost solely on the area’s 10-mile proximity to a favorite drinking establishment, Isaac Hunter’s Tavern. Continuing in this fine time-honored tradition of city planning by pub, our current Urban Design Center extends this invitation to the public:

The Department of City Planning - Urban Design Center will be hosting a spirited, non-traditional planning charrette to discuss the Big Ideas you have for the City of Raleigh of 2030 at the Tir na nog Irish Pub in downtown on April 21st.

This notice is a call for our community’s dreamers, thinkers, and critics, imagineers, and designers to come together to share your ideas, no matter how crazy or far-fetched, for what our community can be.

You want a river downtown? Tell us.
An arena surrounded by walkable retail? Tell us.
A zip line between the Two Hannover Tower and Wachovia Capital Center? Tell us.
A streetcar up Capital Blvd. ? Tell us.
The world’s largest indoor ski slope at Walnut Creek ? Tell us.

You get the point.

Bring your written ideas, pictures, drawings, web site printouts - anything that can communicate or illustrate your concept. We will provide fun, fellowship, a discussion of where the city is heading by 2030 and maps to sketch on and noodle over.

The details:

Where? Tir na nog Irish Pub (218 S. Blount St., Downtown Raleigh)
When? April 21st, 2008 from 6:00 – 9:00 PM

Sheesh. I don’t have a problem with the venue, but how about, “I just want transportation options that don’t endanger children’s lives or lungs.“

Sure, I know those suggestions are tongue-in-cheek, but honestly, there’s so much that’s obvious about our planning needs, do we really need a “zaniest idea contest”?

OOO! OOO! New slogan!! Screw “City of Oaks” - Welcome to Raleigh, home of some wild and crazy guys!
