British miscreants, Arctic Monkeys, are going on tour this fall along with David Bowie aficionados, Smith Westerns. While both groups could be considered revivalists, the pairing of punkish Arctic Monkey with the Smith Westerns’ critically acclaimed signature lushness seems unusual.
On this year’s Dye It Blonde, the Smith Westerns polished up their garage-rock sound into a more glimmery style of lo-fi that found the Chicago rockers bordering on the kind confessional dream-pop albums that girls would steal from their boyfriends in the 1980s. Smith Westerns are returning to Raleigh after impressing a sell-out crowd recently at Kings Barcade for the CAM Opening Night After Party.
The Arctic Monkeys’ newest album, Suck It And See, has them returning to the familiar commentary of the snide high school outsider. Verses spill out like snarky asides over a smirkish jangle of guitar riffs. The band is no stranger to Raleigh, hitting Disco Rodeo back in April of 2010.
The arguably mismatched bands will be coming to Disco Rodeo in Raleigh on October 12th as they tour North America and the UK this fall. In theory, you could bring either a date for the Smith Westerns show, or your rowdy teenage cousin for the Arctic Monkeys – though it’s probably not a good idea to bring both.
