One of, if not THE most anticipated album of 2009 by a North Carolina band will come out in July. The Avett Brothers have enlisted, as previously mentioned, mega-producer Rick Rubin to be behind the mixing boards for their follow up to 2007’s Emotionalism and 2008’s The Second Gleam EP. There’s talk of both genius and destruction in this decision, but after reading a bit about the new album, I’m leaning towards the former.
Only a few details about the new album have emerged, including the title. The new album will be called I And Love And You, which is also the title of one of the songs (which is described as “autumnal, Wilco-style”). Rolling Stone magazine also reveals that the band has been working with Rubin in both Malibu and Asheville. Only one other song is a definite for the album and that is the “poppy Slight Figure of Speech”. The album looks to have a great start and the collaboration between Rubin and the band seems very fluid. Let’s hope this record takes the Avetts where they want to be at this point in their career.
Despite the band’s earthy sound, Scott Avett says “I and Love and You” was inspired by an unlikely classic Rubin production: the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Blood Sugar Sex Magik. “But without the heroin addiction,” he adds.
The Avett Brothers will open for Dave Matthews at Time Warner Pavilion on Wednesday, April 22.
