Farewell in Two Forms - Graffiti and Yellow Paper

image

After posting about The L Building, I decided to check out the site’s progress.  After walking around the site, I found a couple of treasures and a couple of disappointments.  The site is completely cleared and grass is growing throughout.  The lone building standing is the former Poole’s/Vertigo building and the attached gallery on the south side.  There seems to be a lot of work going on inside of Poole’s meaning that the many rumors of it’s future may be true.  As I walked around the back of the building, where the back entrance to King’s used to be, I saw some graffiti that caught my eye.  Posted below is a photo of simple farewell to both Poole’s and King’s that few would see without traveling to the back of the current construction site, bound by a chain-link fence, with a gate that happened to be open.

Also, while traveling back up Dawson, I realized that Kulture had a note on it’s door that sparked my interest.  If you don’t know Kulture, it was bar and music venue that was hidden away on South Dawson Street in a strip of ever changing commercial and gallery shops that are just south of White Collar Crime, just outside the Warehouse District.  It opened in late April of 2006 and hosted various art shows including Friedrich’s Onion Head Monster and most recently Komenda’s Feral Chicken, among others.  It seemed to have it’s regulars and was busy each of the times I attended an art opening, with Rock N Roll playing loud and drinks flowing from a couple of bartenders you would recognize from other venues in downtown.

This Farewell note on the door stated that it would soon be called Deep South Bar and from this post on Kulture‘s blog, it seems that the new owners want to make it a “good downtown Raleigh rock-n-roll watering hole.“  Considering Deep South’s past, I have a feeling the type of “rock-n-roll” bands that will stream through the new bar, but we can only hope for a another place to host bands and maybe art, even.

Good post.  What’s the word on Poole’s anyway?

There was a rumor for a while that Ashley Christenen (sp?) from Vin and Raleigh Times was opening a place in the old Poole’s space, but haven’t heard much from that in a while.
