As mentioned last week, the new Downtown Raleigh Amphitheater is scheduled to open in early June and it seems that one of the opening acts has been announced. Teen pop idols The Backstreet Boys will play the outdoor venue on June 6th with tickets going on sale April 24th. We hear there are a few more “big” surprises but hope they are better than this. No further comment.

Tickets go on sale April 24 at 10 a.m. at LiveNation.com, the Progress Energy Center Box Office, Time Warner Cable Music Pavilion Box Office, Ticketmaster or by phone 800-745-3000.

Raleigh “Boutique” Amphitheater Schedule (thus far):

06/06 - The Backstreet Boys
07/23 - Paramore w/ Tegan and Sara
08/10 - O.A.R. w/ Citizen Cope
08/25 - Sound Tribe Sector 9

You have GOT to be joking.

FYI, you typed 08/06 for the BSB date in the list instead of 06/06.

Really.  It should be MEGAFAUN for EVERY SINGLE SHOW!

    Dear God.

Who is doing the booking for this bunch of retards?

This thing will bankrupt itself in one concert season if they keep bringing in these pure shit acts.

and i was hoping for 98 degrees.

As far as the booking goes, I’m looking squarely at the bar across the corner from the site.

It really doesn’t matter who they book if the place is packed and the patrons spend money.  They filled the date with an available act that they could afford.

From the looks of what they have booked so far, it’s all crap anyway.  Unless you like those bands, then you’ll be headed downtown to spend money and have a good time.

Just chill.  You guys are just too cool for school if you were expecting underground bands that nobody has heard of.  Yes I said it, the target market for music at the new amphitheater is probably not just bloggers in skinny jeans.  I think its a great sign for downtown Raleigh that a new venue without a proven track record seems to be booking shows very fast.

    Where is O Town?

Can’t they at least book the Free Credit Report trio?

    Uggh????  ummm HELL YES!
A large majority of young women in their late teens and early twenties are rejoicing right now.  I can understand that this isn’t everyone’s cup of Tang but seriously just give one up to mainstream pop culture lovers.  And to whoever thinks that “this thing will bankrupt itself”- I can promise that my friends and I alone can turn this into a sellout.

Yeah, thats a pretty good act to get a bunch of chicks to come out.  Who cares if you dont like them.  If it sells tickets then let them play.

Actually, I’ll be amazed if the theater is ready to open by June 6th. I walked by there today. It looks like a big dirt hole with a concrete slab. I think they have a lot of work to do for this place to be ready for any act.

I think I will retract my comments on Paramore at this time.

Are today’s 25 year old women ready to start burning nostalgia dollars to take them back to 1999?

  • DPK
    04/19 09:28 AM

I understand their goal is to make money by selling tickets and this will sell tickets rest assured, however couldn’t they have found a more gender neutral band for the opening gig?

  • KSA
    04/19 11:52 AM

yes…raleigh needs more TIER 1 bands….like the kind that sell 130 million albums in the past 15 years.  I wish we could attract such a band.

wow, this line up keeps getting more and more interesting for this venue, I keep hoping for at least one show I want to see. No offense to BSB fans, but aren’t they kind of a nostalgia act now ? I’m sure it will make money though, they did sell a lot of albums, probably more than all the other booked acts combined, just that it is not proving to be anything I had hoped for, for this new venue.

last week someone was making fun of downtown live lineups only being able to get jimmies chicken shack or better than ezra.  now i would rather watch either of them than the groups they currently have lined up.

    Neat-O! Not!

  • KSA
    04/20 12:47 PM

the cool thing about these concerts is….YOU DON’T HAVE TO GO.  If you wanna see another group or you are a fan of another type of music, I’m pretty sure you’re free to go watch them….wherever they are playing.  So, it works out well for everyone.  God love the free market.

  • corey3rd
    04/20 01:12 PM

“Free Market?” How did this get worked into this conversation? This is the public subsidized market using our tax dollars to create a freebie space for Live Nation to make quick bucks on the public’s back.

That is public land. That is an amphitheater paid for with our taxes. Sure the city swears it’s going to be all paid for in five years because of all the money Live Nation will make booking major acts into the space

This isn’t the free concerts at Moore Square. How much is Paramore?

    Full Price Ticket
    Ticket Price
    US $33.00 x 1
    Price Details
    Facility Charge
    US $3.00 x 1
    Convenience Charge
    US $11.00 x 1

    That’s right - you’re paying $14 on a $33 ticket - and that doesn’t include the parking charges.

    This isn’t a free market - it’s a tax subsidized sodomization.

  • KSA
    04/20 01:53 PM

Corey - you are correct.  It is tax subsidized sodomy.  Live Nation should have had to pay for the land to build the venue and they should pay for every cent of its upkeep.  Just like The Mint should have received no funding, and neither should any business coming into town.  My point about the free market aspect was that anyone who hates BSB can go watch Local Joe Schmoe, ChickenShackJack, or whomever, play wherever they happen to be playing.  There’s no one preventing them from doing so.  You and I are on the same page re: who should be paying for the venue.

  • corey3rd
    04/20 02:37 PM

And did I support the Mint getting its fat cat deal? No.

You really don’t get the point of being disappointed at the crap Live Nation is dumping in this space. They promised us some A List action and we’re getting nostalgia acts that would have been better off as free shows in Moore Square. These are acts that get scooted over here because Live Nation doesn’t want to open up Walnut Creek’s parking lot. Look at who the DPAC brought in and compare it to this swill being dispensed by Live Nation under their “Be happy we care” attitude.

None of us should be surprised looking at how LiveNation/Clear Channel has run the radio and concert action of this area into the ground with their belief that we’re a town full of angry teapartiers and sedated soccer moms.

This is the hot new downtown venue that Meeker and his downtown glitter squad have been begging to create for a decade. You’d expect something better than an Orlando boy band that vanished off the radar when their fans went on the pill.

I want to see this location be an alleged major profit center that Meeker claims we’ll receive from Live Nation. Be nice to not have to pay for a venue. Just think that Live Nation makes $55,000 off the conv fees alone if his joint sells out for Paramore. I know they’re going to share all that cash with the city. (insert laughter)

Live Nation views us as a pathetic third tier market that gets table scraps after Atlanta and Charlotte. And most of the time they have to paper the concerts with their cheap seat giveaways for the pathetic and repetitive line up they stick in Walnut Creek.

good point Corey.  Meeker should stick to BANNING GARBAGE DISPOSALS IN NEW HOME CONSTRUCTION.

As for me, I look forward to the convenience of an $11 charge.

Listen Backstreet Boys fans aren’t going ANYWHERE.  The fact that they have been together for 17 years is a testament to that. And their June 6th Raleigh concert was SOLD OUT!! So much for the new amphitheater going bankrupt on this first concert. Their December BSB cruise also sold out in a matter of hours. ( cost of the tour 800-1300 per person).  I am a 28 year old woman who has been a fan since the age of 13. I will continue to be a fan for life.  The guys told us they are still here because we keep sticking around. And promised that as long as we the fans are there, so will they. So haters keep on hating cause my babies are still making that money.
