It was New Raleigh’s Tim Ayers that first deemed Joseph Carnevale’s rouge sculpture the ‘Barrel Monster’. After that, the N&O, Gawker, ABC, NPR and a whole host of other outlets pumped out information on the artist and his sculpture to the level of infamy. Carnevale’s profile rose to national attention and the company who owned the barrels, Guilford County-based Hamlett Associaties, asked, on NPR no less, that he make a sculpture for their office- saying they didn’t want to press charges because it was great publicity for the 300 odd dollars in barrels that he used.
But Raleigh wants to make an example out of Carnevale. There will be no unauthorized public art vandalism in this city. Let’s hope they go easy on the Barrel Monster maker today.
Over 11,000 Fans on Facebook for a page that was made by other Raleigh residences in Carnevale’s honor.
