Get The Hint: Benefit in Memory of Drew Glackin

This Saturday and Sunday, Raleigh will play host to a Future of Music Coalition benefit concert in memory of NYC alt. country rocker, Drew Glackin, who was widely praised for his mastery of the pedal steel guitar. Drew played with The Silos, Chris Mills, and Tandy, all of whom will play Saturday as part of the two day event featuring a blend of NYC bands with many of Raleigh’s own rockers.

Drew Glackin passed away from severe heart damage on January 5th 2008. Like many musicians and artists, Drew was without health insurance, and he was unaware of an overactive thyroid condition which led to his heart complications. Glackin was not only a member of alt-country legends The Silos, having also toured or recorded with Tandy, Susan Tedeschi, The Hold Steady and Chris Mills, and Gingersol.

Proceeds from the pair of Raleigh benefit concerts will be split 50/50 between the Glackin family, to cover the funeral and medical expenses incurred by Drew, and the HINT program. HINT is an acronym for Health Insurance Navigation Tool, and is described by the Future of Music Coalition website as:

a free, musician-friendly service that offers artists the chance to examine their health insurance options with experts who are also musicians. HINT doesn’t sell anything — interested parties set up an appointment through the program website to schedule an appointment to talk with a HINT representative.The Future of Music Coalition While 50% of the proceeds will go directly to Drew’s family to help cover funeral costs and medical bills, the other half will benefit the HINT program, an initiative of the Future of Music Coalition that provides free, professional guidance to musicians who seek to acquire low-cost, high deductible health insurance plans.
