Big Changes for the LEED Rating System

On Tuesday, the U.S. Green Building council approved significant changes to the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design guidelines for 2009. The updated guidelines will include changes further emphasizing energy efficiency as well as carbon footprint reduction. The new system will also introduce a new set of regional credits, which are intended to account for the regional climate and energy usage differences that have been one of the biggest points of criticism for the original LEED system.

A new rating system for neighborhood developments was also released for the first round of public comments this week, and will remain open until January of 2009.
