No Seriously: Black Crowes, Heart, Puddle of Mudd and More Announced for Downtown Amphitheater
Advertise on NR

According to Menconi, over at the N&O, The Black Crowes are the latest to be added to the lineup at the Downtown Raleigh Amphitheater. Along with that show, another ‘faux’-metal show has been added with a handful of other washed up bands including Puddle of Mudd, Sevendust and more. Also, Heart (who played Koka Booth recently as well) is playing on some date to be announced later.

Not to sound like a music snob (commence the comments) but seriously, this may be the last post on New Raleigh that you see about any bands coming to the Downtown Raleigh Amphitheater unless a band that resembles quality music made post-2000 is booked. Sound Tribe Sector 9 is probably the closest thing to fitting that bill thus far.

06/06 - Backstreet Boys
07/23 - Paramore, Tegan and Sara, New Found Glory
07/25 - Shinedown, Chevelle, Puddle of Mudd, Sevendust, 10 Years
08/10 - O.A.R., Citizen Cope
08/25 - Sound Tribe Sector 9
09/18 - Black Crowes
TBA - Heart

I, for one, am excited for the Black Crowes. Played at Lincoln Theater last year and it was an excellent show.

come on! this is the worst. is downtown live booking this thing? bring on something decent. How about a package with The Hold Steady involved? I want a reason to go, but this schedule is lame

    04/20 04:08 PM

@lastcaseofzima: How is this worse than Backstreet Boys opening?  I disagree 100%.

I actually like Shinedown, Chevelle, Puddle of Mudd, Sevendust, and 10 Years.  Out of all the shows it’s the only one I’m going to see at this point.

Overall I think I’ve figured out what they are doing.  One show per genre of music.  I don’t think anyone is going to see more than one of these shows.  We’ll all have our “one” show.

  • Free
    04/20 04:21 PM

DPK is correct.  1 show and that’s it.  For me, OAR is a good show, but overall, the line-up looks just like Downtown Live bands, except we are now paying ticket prices on top of the tax $$ that our elected officials approved ....and no local bands…

Should have left these concerts at Moore Square and spent this money on something else, until we were prepared to do a proper amphitheatre.

Please New Raleigh, go with your gut and stop posting these, it’s making me sick.

Typical Raleigh.  Lots of talk about being something great but as usual someone is asleep at the wheel.  The DRA is what it is…a temporary location for crappy bands (minus STS9) to come play music for the mindless suburbanite drones.

Are you freaking kidding me?  The Black Crowes are one of the best live bands out there right now.  Finally the new amphitheather snags someone good and you idiots continue to complain.  To the author, you clearly aren’t a “music snob” if you don’t recognize good talent and an amazing live act when it’s right in front of you…sorry they aren’t booking Lady Gaga or whatever the hell you like.  The picture at the top of your article is a great cd put out by BC just 2 years ago and last year they put out a great double CD.  At least Ladye Jane brings some sort of reason to this site…

  • Nordy
    04/20 04:46 PM

Does anyone know who, exactly, is in charge of booking?  Maybe they need some help.  I’m serious.  I’ll gladly volunteer to help out whoever is in charge.  If we all did so, maybe we could get some good bands to play.

Quit your bitching. All of ya! This is going to be awesome for raleigh and so much fun!

I will say this, Citizen Cope is a terrible performer; hopefully he’ll refrain from hitting the bong before he goes out.

Black Crows are the shit. and besides, 90s rock is making a comeback right now…

  • GEB
    04/20 06:22 PM

If you are disappointed with the lineup thus far, it is a good idea to look at the bigger picture:

***Live Nation helped make this amphitheatre a reality. Live Nation is booking 15-20 acts at the amphitheatre. For their sizable contribution to its existence, they get the first rights to dates. So, you are only seeing dates booked by Live Nation. Live Nation not the City, Downtown Live or anyone else.

***The season for the amphitheatre is 180 days. Subtract the Live Nation shows and there are 160 days left in the season that ANYONE can book. Cat’s Cradle, Lincoln, King’s…anyone who wants a little more space.

***There are few (if any) local or Indie bands booked by Live Nation. So, you shouldn’t anticipate seeing those until these 15-20 dates are booked. Then it is open season.

***This is a large venue. 5,000 capacity. The bands currently booked can fill this venue, but not a larger one. So, when you go to LiveNation.com don’t think that Pearl Jam would be a perfect band for this because they could fill a venue much larger.

***Routing and tours play a huge part in the bands we get. All of these bands are on tour, so we get the bands that make sense to come through here.

***These bands are big here or else they wouldn’t come. This plays in to the doctrine of “Different Strokes for Different Folks.” Every one of these bands will most likely sell a lot if not all of the tickets available. More than 6,000 people came out to see Joan Jett. A lot of people came to see Charlie Daniels.

The amphitheatre is great. Don’t worry! There’ll be plenty of great bands of all kinds to come through.

  • Ben
    04/20 06:27 PM

This is what happens when the Generation X finally grows up and starts families.  Nostalgia sets in and someone is going to capitalize on that, unfortunately.  Did you hear Creed announced a reunion tour?  What a joke of a lineup this is.

I guess the 90’s are coming back in a sense, but they should really stay down for the count.  Have fun at the new amphitheater, sheep.

For the people that live for new and interesting music, no need to worry.

  • Cheeeese
    04/20 06:28 PM

FAIL FAIL FAIL. This is a pathetic start for a potentially fantastic venue.  Maybe we should rally for Nickelback, Hanson and Silverchair.

The only reason the BC are still good live is because Luther from North Mississippi Allstars is their guitarist and that’s only temporary.  They are done after this year.

90’s making a comeback…HA…only to suburbanite drones.  However, Creed did just announce their new tour….maybe they’ll swing by Raleigh.

    Extremely disappointed Raleigh.

Ugh you people piss me off with your elitist bullshit.  It was not too long ago that there was nothing downtown… here we have a brand new outdoor concert venue that everyone was begging for, and you still find things to bitch about, and go even further by putting down the “suburbanite sheep drones” that a few years ago everyone used to make fun of for never coming downtown… so now they will, and people STILL complain.  I HATE that crap… ooohh you’re not as cool as me, because I like obscure bands… Please.  ANYTHING that brings people and money downtown is good.  Period.  In twenty years, feel free to bitch about lack of venues for obscure indie bands most people have never heard of.

  • Rostel
    04/20 07:36 PM

Yeah, you people are pathetic.  These bands will bring people downtown and bring business to the area.  SO SHUT THE HELL UP!!!  If more people come to like these obscure indie bands of yours, then they can book bigger venues like this one.  By then, lots of people will like the bands you like and you even might be able to hear them on the radio.  OH BOY!!!

But then you’ll realize that you dont feel as cool and special because lots of people like your special little band that you’ve followed from the beginning.  They may even be considered popular music.  Kinda like what happens to most bands who come from obscurity.

But until then, you can keep going to show in the old kerr drug in that strip mall in Chapel Hill.  I dont really give a shit if you come to Raleigh or not.

  • Synaesthesiac
    04/21 01:56 AM

I understand the frustration.  The city of Raleigh builds the foundation, and the movers-and-shakers pick it up from there to build the culture.  NR represents a vocal minority who have some specific ideas about how to form the zeitgeist, and these people are extremely valuable to the city—they are the ones who will give it lasting character.  So a contract goes to a big corporate bookie who basically gives us the “middle-America cultureless masses” concert package.  North Carolina still isn’t breaking free from the lazy daze, continuing to rely on carpetbaggers for its economic development.  There is good reason to be pissed, this is just another instance of the same damned mistake we’ve been making in this state for nearly 150 years.

  • Chris
    04/21 03:09 AM

Im all for the Crowes, they always put on a great show. The sad part is I have this joke saying that “this joint is one Puddle of Mudd away from a total suckfest.” Well, Raleigh, here we are. SuckFest 10 7/25. Dont bother to get your tickets now, there will be plenty left in late july.

  • CP
    04/21 08:51 AM

Obviously, the venue is too big for local bands, and too small to play acts that are huge and hot right now. I don’t think people are trying to be negative, but these acts are not anything that wouldn’t come outside Lincoln Theater, or Moore Square. I saw the Black Crows outside the lincoln, a couple years ago, and to me, they kinda sucked, and the show was really short, Puddle of Mudd played Moore Square for free. Hey it’s one more venue to have, which is good, hopefully they will announce something I want to see.

  • bmcclain

Have you ever thought of the possibility that there is NO “quality” music made post-2000?

Last time I checked U2 along with a host of other “Pre-2000” bands are still the only music groups that can actually sell out an arena, hell some can still sell out a stadium, 10,20,30 years later.

Name a “post-2000” band that can do that!

Actually there are quite a few good, mid-level bands that could go in this space, including Drive-By Truckers, Hold Steady and Arcade Fire. That sold-out Mastodon show could easily have gone there. A lot of the shows that go to the NCMA could go the amphitheater. I just don’t buy the argument that this new venue is the wrong size to feature good music. And I hate to say this, but Deep South did a better job with their booking because they at lease included some worthy local bands as openers.

  • rl
    04/21 12:10 PM

we def need some post 2000 bands here at the venue and from ALL genres. i hope it isnt just pop star shit! pop, rock, rand b and hip hop need to come! diverse artist is what makes raleigh “rock” not just catering to one genre which is what raleigh has been doin for years!

  • aburtch
    04/21 12:34 PM

To quote @bitter “ANYTHING that brings people and money downtown is good.  Period.”

Also I suspect most of the more hip bands that people would like to see at the amphitheater wouldn’t be able to fill 5,000 seats.  It’s harder to pull an audience these days.

And finally the Black Crows are currently making good music.  “Before the Frost…Until the Freeze” especially the second disc, was excellent.

  • ScottyM
    04/21 12:51 PM

“Actually there are quite a few good, mid-level bands that could go in this space, including Drive-By Truckers, Hold Steady and Arcade Fire.”
-Bands that could not sell out this venue alone.
Slightly Stoopid and Citizen Cope are probably the least mainstream acts that will play here, and they still need a once-popular group (music listed on the Vader-like Billboard top 100)to do so.

  • Karen
    04/21 03:24 PM

Sorry bc but I just don’t agree with you. DBT and Hold Steady might have a little trouble on their own, but with the right opening bands, or together, they could do it. I have no doubt Arcade Fire could sell out that amphitheater. We frequently hear the excuse that hip bands won’t bring in enough people, or that the people they bring in won’t buy enough beer, but so far no one has been willing to give it a try.

  • Blah blah blah
    04/21 07:17 PM

Few bands can capture the imagination, stir the spirit, touch the soul and rattle your dental work as Sevendust. The Atlanta based band draws from the entire color-wheel, possessing that rare ability to take a page from the Mohammed Ali book to “float like a butterfly and sting like a bee”. Few songs by Modern Rock bands can dance on the heartstrings like “Angel’s Son” from their “Animosity” album, or bludgeon the senses like “Splinter” the first song on their forthcoming album, “Cold Day Memory”. The new CD drops the day after their ROCKLINE appearance allowing us to be the final stop on their take-no-prisoners, full bore press tour and giving you the opportunity to speak with them as the release actually occurs live across the continent. You can actually purchase and download the CD during the show. The Atlanta quintet has the rare ability to go full spectrum with their music and far from losing any audience with their diversity, they actually enhance their connection with the fans. But make no mistake, “Cold Day Memory”, while sporting perhaps a touch more melody that on prior releases, is not for the faint of heart. The band has yet to disappoint denying their minions what they want, to the contrary they just keep getting better at it. Join them on their websites at Sevendust.com and MySpace.

Sevendust serves a rich palette of emotions lyrically as well as sonically rampaging through themes of chaos and anarchy, balancing the craziness with tales of redemption and romance. Nowhere is this more evident than in back to back songs from their forthcoming album as they shift gears from “The End Is Coming” to “Better Place” and do so with grace, dignity and ultra-high wattage. Part of the magic of the band is their ability to reveal innermost feelings, positive and negative, without exuding maudlin or melancholy sensitivities, yet still digging deep, unafraid to reveal some honesty and sensitivity. The band hooked up with one of the hottest producers in Rock to fully capture the scintillating sonic aspect of their new songs by packing their bags and heading Chicago way to work with one Johnny K, he of Disturbed fame as well as Staind, Three Doors Down, Finger Eleven and, well, let’s just halt here as this is about Sevendust, but you get the picture. “K” has the hot hand right now and so do our hot ‘Lantans, Lajon, Clint, Morgan, Vince and John.

I think we all need to be careful not to insist our musical taste is when “should” be booked for the new downtown location.

Naturally, my taste is way beyond reproach.

However, I’m fairly certain most would agree that we “should” support local bands as much as we possibly can.  We need to yell from the rooftops how much talent we have in Eastern North Carolina.

This is a smaller venue so like Koko Booth your going to only be able to get smaller acts.  It will compete for what goes into Koko Booth or The DPAC.  Live Nation still has their bread and butter at Walnut Creek so they will notbring in anything that competes with their shows there.  Don’t expect U2 or bands that can pack out the Creek here (which really is only the country acts and a few others like Tom Petty, Dave Matthews and the Allman Brothers)But acts like Michael Franti, Jason Maarz, Daughtry, and older acts like Santana or Willie Nelson could do graet there.  I loved the Downtown Live Free concerts.  It gave you a cheap family outing, you weren’t taking a chance on paying to see a band that you really only liked 1 song by and you got to see a bunch of good local bands.  Merchants, bars and restaurants around Moore Square benefited as well.  The city of Raleigh and Live Nation are hoping to make some money off this venue.  Something I am sure the city wasn’t doing with Downtown Live.  Don’t expect them to fill it up with cool music all the time.  But if they can book a nice mix of things everyone will be happy.  I do wish they would continue the Downtown Live events on say a Sunday afternoon.

So much for the embracing of diversity. If it’s not you’re thing, then don’t spend your dollars on it (I, for one, am not interested in any of these folks.  How amazing would it be to hear Sigur Ros or Jonsi reverbing off of the RCC/Shimmerwall?). There’s plenty of potential for all.  And besides: to be bitchin’ about how these entertainment groups or the City is now limiting your Saturday night simply means you have WAY too much disposable income anyway.  If you want a real city, folks, there’s going to be some obnoxious, non-hipster sh*t coming with that. First off I have to step up to defend the Black Crowes. They are one of the best bands in history and put on a damn great live show. And they’re latest album is GREAT! I’m a music snob too and love a
good Indy band as much as the next hipster…but the Crowes are timeless.
But obviously, other than the Crowes, and i guess STS9 and maybe citizen cope this is about the most garbage lineup I’ve ever seen.
I love to hype Raleigh to people that don’t live here and downtown Raleigh in particular but this is embarassing. I moved back here from Charlotte bc Raleigh is so much hipper….but DAMN! Lately I’m seeing far better talent atthe cat’s
cradle, DPAC, and even at several of the Charlotte venues.
Get some good bands Raleigh. There are too many of music snobs in town to feed this shit.

    All I can say,
    About the performance,
    I saw that day.
    It was simply marvelous.
    I wish you may,
    have a real chance,
    to watch and you’ll reply,
    That it’s just fabulous.
