You use the word party six times in this post, Jed. Do you “party wet?”

I went, with much trepidation, went to 5-Star last night just before 1am to meet some friends.  The music wasn’t really my cup of tea, but perhaps thirty-something is just too old to enjoy what they were pumping.  The reason I was a little on edge about visiting there after years of abstaining is because (at least several years ago) every time we have ever gone to 5-Star when it is in “club mode” there is some kind of problem.  I have seen numerous fights there, I was 15 feet away from a stabbing out front years back, I have had several problems with being improperly charged, and have run in to some pretty rude employee’s.  Years ago, when attempting to follow up on a bad charge, owner Chris Bender chose not to help me but chose instead to put his hand in my face and walk away.  This was in response to my very polite introduction and the first few sentences of what I wanted to ask him about.  So much for my attempt at resolving the problem owner to customer…I just had my credit card company chargeback the entire (very large) amount.  Last night I (and several others) witnessed the bouncer, who is an employee representing the business, blatantly provoke a fight with a patron and then proceed to punch him over and over.  This altercation was then slowly moved to the street where it continued for a bit, involving a few other people along the way, and eventually ended up on the sidewalk.  During, the bouncer took off his shirt and walked around like a unintelligent wild animal and stomped around huffing and shouting.  Charges should have been pressed against that guy, and the management should have promptly removed him from the building…Forever.  I promptly removed myself from the building and am once again on self-imposed exile from attending any events there.

Hi to all New Raleigh Followers,

Micah, I would like to step up and offer an apology for any problems you may have had with our establishment in the past. I have now been the manager of Five Star for the past four years and have worked very hard to correct any public relation problems you may have had with us in the past.

Unfornately, situations such as this arise at any bar/nightclub/scene where alcohol is involved. This is why the gentleman which you place blame on, has been our paid employee for 12 years. He is trained to deal with these situations in a professional manner. On Friday night, a dispute broke out between some customers upstairs. Will, our bouncer/doorguy, was asked by a customer to come upstairs and break up a potential arguement. During which he had someone involved jump on his back, and in doing so ripped his shirt off. The people involved were then professionally escorted out of the building and asked to leave our premises. If you have any other questions regarding this event, past or future events, or other concerns please feel free to stop by and talk to me in person. I am available any day or night, at any time convenient for you.

    Sincerely,
    Khoa Dinh

“During which he had someone involved jump on his back, and in doing so ripped his shirt off.”

    That’s classic.

Khoa, I appreciate your taking the time to respond.  I will have to respectfully disagree with your version of events.  This incident started less than 10 feet away from me and my friends, and nothing about what happened from that point on was professional even in the most vague definition of the word.  Perhaps our understanding of “professional” differs.  Thanks for the offer to talk, but I think it would be a fruitless endeavor for the both of us.  I wish you the best at Five Star.  It certainly has a following.  There are just too many other places in Raleigh where my friends and I can enjoyably spend our time…And our money.

I agree with you Micah.  I have friends who love this place and I cannot figure out why.  Thankfully, this past friday, I didn’t end up there even though some friends wanted to go.  We ended up at foundation instead.

Interesting that I come across this post. I too do not recommed going to Five Star. My first and you can bet my last experience was on Halloween 2009. It was getting late and my date and I had sat on a stair to chat. A staff member politely asked us to move and seeing that we were not kids told us we could sit at a table in a section that was ropped off. We were not drinking and it was a nice break from noise and smoke. We sat and talked until we heard someone shouting violently and realized they were shouting at us. An Asian fellow. He was incredibly rude. I walked over and explained that a staff member told us we could sit there. He proceeded to shout at me to get out and when my date went back to the table to retrieve her shoes he began to scream at her to “move it!” I had had enough and sternly asked him to stop shouting at my date and who he thought he was treating people like this. He then grabs me by my shirt and shouts “your outa here!” then pushes me towards the exit. We were totaly shocked and outraged! I have never been asaulted in this manner and thats exactly what it was. An unprovoked assault!

If you looking to have fun in Raleigh there are dozens of better options to choose from. Places that know how to treat a patron! My rating of Five Star is no star!
