Bonnie Prince Billy to Play Carrboro Arts Center

Before Bon Iver, Fleet Foxes and other hipsters with flannels and beards were entertaining NPR listeners, there was Will Oldham aka Bonnie Prince Billy. Oldham has been performing his folk-punk/mountain music for almost 20 years now, ushering in much of the neo-soul/freak folk/whatever-you-call-it genre that has taken over the airwaves in the past few years. He is surely looked to as a major influence by many of the artists in this genre. Along with being a musician, Oldham has a slender acting career, including the must see Yo La Tengo scored Old Joy.

Oldham will bring his brand of folk music and all his pseudonyms to The Arts Center in Carrboro on May 28th (same night as The National at Lincoln Theatre). Ironically, I also saw Yo La Tengo in this same venue a year or two ago. This will be a great venue for this show and today is a perfect day for some Bonnie Prince Billy tunes. Rainy solitude.

No ticket information is available.

Another great show. It’s a pity that the booming metropolis of Raleigh cannot score a decent show. Everyone is heading to Carrboro or the new DPAC. I guess that speaks volumes about Raleigh. Lots of bullshit awards and recognitions, but all we can get is country crap and washed old 1980’s rockers at the Creek.

Before you go claiming that Raleigh can’t pull in any good acts, note that the National is also playing on May 28th at the Lincoln.  Personally, I’m upset that these two shows are on the same night.
