I had a chance to go by the Boylan Bridge Brewpub and taste a couple of the beers and they are quite tasty.
So far, a pale ale, golden ale, and winter “warmer” have been brewed at the long awaited pub and restaurant. The pale ale is the only beer that is currently being fed to the taps but the golden ale was moved from the brewing room upstairs to the downstairs storage area where it will stay for at least 24 hours before being pumped into the bar tap. The winter warmer was recently brewed and has yet to be filtered. Its next step will be through the filters and down to the area where the pale ale and golden ale currently reside.
The only two beers that were available for tasting were the pale ale and winter warmer. The pale ale wasn’t very carbonated, as it was just recently moved downstairs, and the carbonation increases daily. But, the carbonation didn’t detract from the taste. A very smooth beer, Boylan Bridge’s pale ale had a similar consistency to many of the mainstream pale ales. After a half a pint of the pale ale, it was on to the winter warmer in the brew room which still had a bit of sediment but definitely had a coffee hint to the flavor and a nice consistency, especially to be non-filtered. Then it was back to the pale ale.
Both beers show promise for the new space. The only other brewery in Raleigh is Horniblow’s and it is located in a warehouse off the beaten path and doesn’t have the most inviting environment for variable types of patrons. I personally love Big Boss beer and the Horniblow’s space but can see, from its location and spatial arrangement, how it would detract many otherwise regular visitors. The Boylan Bridge Brewpub won’t have this problem. With a prominent downtown location, fabulous patio with a great view of downtown, great beer and casual interior, BBB will be very successful….once it’s up and running.

The rumors are right. No smoking. No televisions. Food will be served and there will be a total of six beers on tap. Each booth has an electrical outlet, handy for laptops and there will be booths as well as more flexible tables in the space (which should be made downstairs at Special Projects in the next week or so). Beer and wine are a definite and liquor is probable but not for sure…yet.
The brewpub will not open before the new year but looking at the progress of the furniture and quick production of beer, it looks to be open very early in 2009. There’s a lot of free time, personal commitment and passion invested in this space and therefore it should have a promising future ahead of it, even if it is a bit later than expected. At least it’ll have most of the kinks worked out before opening, unlike many places who get a business loan to open a space and have to rush to get it open. Such is not the case at Boylan and hopefully it will show in the end.

Boylan Bridge Brewpub Beer Breweries
thanks for the update. i’m really surprised that this place isn’t getting any more publicity.
I’m not surprised. That place used up their 15 minutes a long time ago. The Noise and Disturber first mentioned them in November 2005 with an opening date of summer 2006! After a while people stop listening to the boy who cried wolf.
I’ll be one of the first customers if/when they open, mostly because I want to try the beer before they go under.
I agree with smitty on all points. I’ll be one of the first to buy a beer there in 2009. Just like smitty, I first heard about Sidetrack from a neighbor way back in 2005! That doesn’t make it hard to understand the publicity issue, or why people are skeptical.
THIS PLACE IS GOING TO BECOME THE HOTTEST DRINKING AND SOCIALIZING PLACE IN TOWN AS WELL AS HAVING AN EXCELLENT MENU.
THE VIEW IS KILLER. IT REMINDS ME OF SEATTLE.
Epic fail awaits
I’m looking forward to its opening too. I’m not holding my breath or checking with them to find out. I just figure this blog will apprise me of its opening once it’s open.
I LOVE TALKING IN CAPS, I’M SO EXCITED, THINGS ARE HAPPENING, CAPS LOCK!
I think your comments about Horniblows are mistaken, I find it to be a very friendly environment…so less pretentious than most Raleigh bars….and in the end this new place will only be successful if their beer is awesome. I will go for sure to check it out.
Anybody have any news on an opening day? Their blog has been stale for over a week now!
Word is approx Jan 12. There will be no announcement, no grand opening; one day it will just be open.
-
Mattafact, I wandered in the other night and tried a couple of the beers. Very nice.
No grand opening, it’ll just be open one day!?!? Again, I’m not trying to be a jerk, because I want this place to succeed, but how will anyone, save the 4 of us on this blog, know its open? Hargett and Boylan isn’t exactly a bustling intersection. If a tree falls in the woods, but nobody is there….....
Not a bustling intersection in terms of traffic counts. From a conventional suburban real estate perspective, you’re right, this location would fail.
-
But applying conventional suburban standards isn’t the key here. (In fact, what *made* downtown fail was applying the rules of the ‘burbs to it back in the 70’s)
-
Traffic counts aren’t what counts at this site. Cars aren’t going to make this brewpub buzz.
-
Even the beer styles are specifically designed to be refreshing to cyclists and pedestrians.
-
(I love that there is no parking lot)
Betsy, I don’t quite follow what you mean. Is word of mouth going to be enough to get this place going and then thriving? No advertisement of an opening and only pedestrians seeing it seems like only a small group will ever know it’s there. A fantastic product is only going to take it so far. If nobody is buying it, then how long can they last? At this point, it’s going to be you, me, and hackles10 keeping this place alive.
For me personally, no parking lot is great. However, there is some writing on the wall that it may become a significant problem down the road. Bloomsbury will eventually open, and even if it has its own parking, I’d wager that there will be overflow from visitors and the like.
If this is going to be a small little pub for the residents of Boylan Heights and Bloomsbury, then it’ll probably be fine. If it’s going to become a popular destination for more than that, I think it might be an issue.
Smaller restaurants and bars typically don’t do a grand opening right away. It pays to have a quiet opening and work out the kinks for a little while.
Well, every time I walk across the Boylan Ave Bridge, I see three people I know, no matter what time of day or night, and that is the only block in Raleigh where I can count on such a thing. So yes, I do believe in traffic counts—as long as they’re of a different kind of traffic.
-
As for word of mouth, it got me me practically everything I have in life, so I guess I believe in that, too.
-
You think a grand opening will help a bar that has no word-of-mouth factor? You think a parking lot will help a bar that has no traffic counts? I guess you could be right. I could be wrong. We’ll see!
No smoking? In a brewpub?
No, thanks. I love patronizing local beer (my fridge is usually home to Big Boss Bad Penny) but if I can’t also enjoy a pipe of tobacco, well, forget it. I’ll see you at the Landmark Tavern over on Hargett Street instead.
I partially agree with Mangus. I smoke when I’m drinking, but tend to hate really smoky bars when they are crowded (like Jackpot). I won’t hold it against them if you can’t smoke inside though. I’ll just only patronize the Brewpub in the Spring and Fall when I can sit on the patio. In the Summer and Winter I will go to Landmark.
Micah, I hate smokey bars, too. But bars don’t have to be smokey! With decent ventilation, the smoke just disappears! I remember sitting over at the Fox & Hound at North Hills, smoking my pipe, and it was getting pretty nasty in there. I asked the waitress if the ventilation system was on and she checked, sure enough it wasn’t. Within seconds of turning it on, you could see the thick funk of smoke just disappear. They had invested in a decent system, and as a result the people around me didn’t have to suffer.
