Boylan Bridge Brewpub Menu & Beer Names

The soon to open Boylan Bridge Brewpub has released their menu, daily specials included, and have also announced the names of the soon to be drinkable beers. They will be carrying Larry’s Beans coffee and a couple of NC wines as well.

Download full menu here and the winners of the beer naming competition are…..

Bruno Bitter
Coal Porter
Southbound Stout
Gateway Golden
Rail Pale Ale
Polar Bear Winter Beer

And here’s their beer naming recognition policy, in case one of the above names was yours.

If we use your name, we’ll point at you and say, “...that’s the dude who gave us that cool beer name!” or, we’ll give you a free beer,... not sure yet. But definintely one of those two things.

More on the Boylan Bridge Brewpub.

• Magnus01/26 03:30 AM

OK I am ready for beer now already! wink

Between the new brewpubs opening soon, LoneRider brewery, etc. it is almost starting to look like there may be a few people in Raleigh that will go out of their way to find quality craft-brewed beer. Who’d have thought it?

• kg01/26 08:51 AM

porter and a stout? wow, luck-ee day. looks good so far.

• mf01/26 09:17 AM

those names are flat out awful, I hate to say it but…

“coal” porter?
“rail” pale ale?
“bruno” bitter?

Come on, don’t you want to have something a little more memorable if not at least totally lame?

I’ll be ordering them by the type of beer only I think.

• Magnus01/26 10:25 AM

@kg - Yeah I love the dark stuff, too. It’s rare that I have to choose between having a porter or a stout!

@mf - Ummm you did notice the place is built overlooking train tracks, right? It stands to reason they might incorporate that into naming their beers. After a few pints of porter you may think it’s clever, anyway.

• mf01/26 10:42 AM

i realize that but perhaps a bit more descriptive or unique train jargon than simply coal beer or rail beer?

• kg01/26 10:55 AM

what about:

thomas the train ipa
casey jones amber
all aboard ale
raleigh zephyr brown
mr. rogers train to make believe cream ale
choo choo porter

• Lisa Jeffries01/26 11:33 AM

“choo choo porter”

I like it!

• tc01/26 11:51 AM

they can call it train beer for all I care, as long as it tastes good.

I’m anxious to give it a try.

• Tony01/26 01:10 PM

I think Coal Porter is clever.

And I would be all about a sandwich called a Hamtrak.

• cm01/26 01:12 PM

when is this place going to open?

• hackles1001/26 01:12 PM

Beer Names are fine….opening date still in question!

• JT01/26 01:19 PM

I am offering an even money wager Natty Greens will open before smile

• Oberlin01/26 01:31 PM

Can’t wait for this place to open. Shame there’s no Hobo Hefeweizen though.

• Katherine01/26 01:34 PM

I dont think the names are horrible but it would have been cool to have names with a more local flavor, the names are just sorta bland (although if pushed, I am not sure I could come up anything better….lol)....but I do agree with whoever said doesnt matter what the name of the beer is, if its good I will drink it!

I also agree that this area is jonesing for more local brews, after going to the Lonerider opening last friday its obvious, the place was slam packed! I loved the Shotgun Betty (hefe) but most of my friends dug the Dead Eye Jack (porter), no matter what, the beer was good and local, cant beat that….

• al01/26 03:22 PM

JT,
Natty Greene’s might open before, but guess what? They are an already established business with money and experience. Things are easier the second time around. Why does alot of people on this blog feel a need to beat up on local businesses all the time? You all say you want local this and local that, but alot of you just complain and make jabs. It’s so disheartening. JT, where is your brewery? How long did it take you to get up and running? Oh, you don’t have one do you? It’s so easy to sit on the sidelines and criticize.

• al01/26 03:24 PM

Oh and more thing, MF, let’s hear your great list of creative names. If you don’t have anything to contribute then shut up.

• hackles1001/26 03:26 PM

Im not advocating any of the jabs…but I think it was all in jest. I don’t think anyone on here honestly believes that Natty Greens (which should open by August) will open before BB, which looks to open in the next week or two!

• abbsouth01/26 03:36 PM

why does the brewpub hate vegetarians? this is ridiculous. when a preliminary menu went up with nothing interesting on it i sent an email to the pub and someone named MC Palermo assured me (hah!) that there would be lots of options. i’m not seeing option, let alone lots… i’m sure i’ll go since i live in BH, but i’m sure i’m not the only one disappointed in the menu.

• tc01/26 03:39 PM

Al has a point.

It’s easier to be critical than creative.

• hackles1001/26 03:44 PM

Onion Rings
Side Track Fries
Quiche Florentine
Flatbread Pizza
Mixed Green Salad

All of these are veggie…not a “ton of items” but not bad considering there are only 14 items on the whole menu. I guess it would be nice to add a sandwich or two for the vegetarians…but what else do you want?
36% of the menu is veggie.

• tc01/26 03:45 PM

Not being a vegetarian, I don’t know what to look for, but I see pasta, salads, quiches, pizzas, and soup. Does a bar need tofu and bean cakes to be vegetarian-friendly? I think the menu looks pretty good for a bar.

• kg01/26 03:50 PM

all joking aside, i can’t wait to have this place as an alternative to the standard glenwood south establishments or flying saucer. raleigh’s spring and fall is way too nice not to have a multitude of outdoor options. that patio thing is going to rock.

• abbsouth01/26 03:52 PM

ummm… none of those items are entrees. I and my veg friends are pretty used to cobbling together meals from side dishes, we just get tired of doing it all the time. don’t expect bean cakes (whatever those are) but kind of think this is a hugely missed opportunity to make a neglected demographic a little happier.

• Micah01/26 03:59 PM

I too am surprised there isn’t a vegetarian entree…At least a veggie burger. While I think the prices are average, I’m surprised they didn’t match the Borough’s prices (which are a little cheaper).

• Tico01/26 04:13 PM

So where do you park if you can’t walk to get here? Can’t wait to sample the beer selection. The only thing I have to be critical of so far is the outdoor seating. Its the coolest deck in Raleigh and it was begging for something more interesting than the $79 Lowes picnic table kits.

• Magnus01/26 04:48 PM

The vegetarians have it better than the smokers here. Stop whining already.

• Ken Metzger01/26 05:02 PM

Wait, so who needs to stop whining? I do grow tired sometimes of smelling like smoke, but have yet to have a problem getting the tofu smell out of my jacket.

• Lisa Jeffries01/26 06:04 PM

^^^
Agreed, definitely need a relaxing chair with some back support. Picnic tables are inviting for long periods of time.

Side of street parking isn’t impossible as long as it’s not after 10pm down by the track. Boy, I’d love to own that building just across the tracks that used to be a towing and shop building… the one with all the massive parking behind it. I’d let all of you guys park for free grin

• smitty01/26 06:29 PM

Menu looks good, too bad they never seem to be open.

• JT01/26 09:58 PM

Al,

I have 47 microbrews spanning the south east. They take on average 2 months from market conception to doors opening.

I hope you aren’t one of the people involved in the project… Especially since I am your market. You could have handled my post by taking the menu and putting the date as Opening 2012 or something fun like that followed with a smart ass remark to retort. There, humor 101, maybe now you won’t get all defensive and make it seem like you’re a stick in the mud.

• JT01/26 10:00 PM

Oh yeah, and about the need to beat up on local businesses…. Almost all of my entertainment money and eating out money go to local businesses. I’m a customer so yes I can complain.

But if you didn’t get the last post either I was just joking smile

• JT01/26 10:05 PM

why does the brewpub hate vegetarians?

Anthony Bourdain says it best,

“Vegetarians, and their Hezbollah-like splinter-faction, the vegans, are a persistent irritant to any chef worth a damn. To me, life without veal stock, pork fat, sausage, organ meat, demi-glace, or even stinky cheese is a life not worth living. Vegetarians are the enemy of everything good and decent in the human spirit, an affront to all I stand for.”

• 15001/27 08:42 AM

-Anyone who has been commenting on this issue for the past several years obviously cares about this topic and likely wants the BB Brewpub to succeed. We are all potential customers, and a lot of the criticisms likely stem from the fact that the customers are seeing things that concern them (and there’s a lot to be concerned about). I don’t think the criticisms should be viewed in the way al interpreted them. Those involved with BB Brewpub obviously read these comments, and I would hope that they would be listening to these concerns with open ears, as some of the suggestions could potentially benefit the business.
-As for the names, they aren’t that great, but it doesn’t really matter if the beer is good. Yes, I get the railroad theme, but sticking “rail” in front of pale ale isn’t very creative. My first impression is that the menu looks like it was hastily created. Generic “fish”, “pasta”, and “steak” as nightly specials? Why not offer a little more description (perhaps that’s planned)? The weekly pig-pickin on the porch seems a little ambitious to me as well, but if it works, it could be a crowd pleaser. I throw my hands up at the “bit-her” thing. I just don’t get it.
-Overall, I still wish them well, but I sense a Hook Up thing about this place unfortunately, and the more I learn, the more I feel like I won’t end up being much of a customer. I’ll likely just end up at Flying Saucer. Best of luck to those involved (I’m not being sarcastic, I mean it).

• Lizounette01/27 10:21 AM

150 - on their website they had explained their specials. “steak” night or “fish” night are just the theme they’ll do for those night and the specifics of which type of fish or what cut of beef will be based on what specials are available.

I’m not a beer drinker, but I am excited nonetheless about this place. I think the menu looks good for bar menu and the location/patio/skyline I don’t think you can beat.

• APM01/27 10:36 AM

A mushroom sandwich or veggie burger would be a nice addition to the menu. While fries and onion rings are vegetarian, I’m not going to make that a meal. I’ll only eat flatbread and salad so many times. I might go to BB for a beer, but it doesn’t look like they’ll be getting my dinner business.

• smitty01/27 11:22 AM

Does anybody know what the holdup is this time? They mentioned something about permits.

• Drew B01/27 03:24 PM

Does it bother anyone else that they went a couple blocks down the street, took a picture at another bar and use that as the image on their beer page? I’ll still go there and (hopefully) enjoy the beer, but would rather they promote their own image instead of someone else’s.

• bb01/27 03:43 PM

That is funny, that picture is so obviously the Flying Saucer, trampy waitress outfit and all…never noticed that til you pointed it out….how sad….

• Magnus01/27 03:46 PM

Drew - Now that you pointed out their faux pas, I’m laughing my ass off at this.

• Chad01/27 04:59 PM

I don’t think I have ever been on this website where I didn’t see at least one person that felt the need to piss and moan, because someone doesn’t want to cater to there minority lifestyle. Vegetarians! Face it people don’t care that you’ve decided not to eat meat, get over it.

• abbsouth01/27 05:11 PM

it seems like everyone is putting in their two cents because they care and want this place to succeed. no one expects the brewpub to be all things to all people. if they have good beer and good service, i’m sure plenty of us will go. i know i will. plenty of people drink at starbucks even with their silly “venti, grande” names. most vegetarians at places where meat is mostly served. smokers go to nonsmoking venues. nonsmokers go to places that make them choke. my comment was towards my hopes that there will be some openness to accommodating people who for a variety of reasons chose not to eat meat besides a plate full of appetizers. i wasn’t trying to make an ad hominem attack on carnivores, just hoping that i wouldn’t have to walk past my new neighborhood bar for a meal. asking for some meatless options isn’t the same as suggesting that there be less or no meat. i hope you all have plenty to enjoy there as well.
cheers

• smitty01/27 06:46 PM

I’ve never seen a bar with no TV in it before, should be interesting.

• smitty01/27 06:47 PM

I take that back, not sure Rockford has a TV.

• hackles1001/27 09:49 PM

any word on an opening date yet? really want to sip a beer at BB!

• al01/28 10:04 AM

Joe,

I am not affilated with the Boylan Brewpub in any capacity whatsoever. I am not Andrew Leager.

Al

• raleighsignshop01/28 10:07 AM

not copperplate!

• 15001/28 11:04 AM

Drew B and bb, you two are absolutely right. That’s definitely a picture of the Flying Saucer. Makes you wonder if the Flying Saucer is aware of that.
Sorry, but that’s exactly the type of stuff that invites criticism.

• Pepper01/29 08:19 AM

Photo has been pulled. At least they are listening.

• Magnus01/29 08:26 AM

Working on the web site may have delayed opening another day.

• 15001/29 09:30 AM

Are you sure Pepper? The picture still appears on the Beers page.

• Pepper01/29 09:37 AM

Not on my two different browsers and wireless device. You may have a cached version of the page.

• 15001/29 10:46 AM

Thanks Pepper. I was wondering if that was the case.

• bobby b01/29 11:13 AM

Hobo Hefe, All Aboard Ale, and Choo Choo Porter… love em! They should use those names for sure!

• Pepper01/30 12:38 PM

New photo of what seems like a pint of their beer on Da Beers! section.

Good call guys.

• 15001/30 01:32 PM

This is a great example of how criticism can lead to improvements! Criticism isn’t always negative. Good job BB Brewpub!

• hackles1002/10 03:42 PM

Anybody? Anybody? Amazing that there has been no progress towards news of an opening date? The place looks done inside…whats the holdup now?

and don’t say “permits”

• Magnus02/10 03:43 PM

@hackles10 - Perhaps the beer has gone stale waiting for the opening date to arrive. wink

• hackles1002/10 03:45 PM

Crickets…all I hear are crickets!

• abbsouth02/10 03:58 PM

all i know is someone from the n&o asked the bh neighborhood listserve for thoughts on the opening, so maybe there will begin a new comment chain after that story appears (if it ever does). in lieu of the brewpub itself, all we have is our opinions… here’s hoping reality ceases to be merely virtual. it is suddenly spring and i want a beer looking over the city and the tracks.

• hackles1002/10 04:03 PM

This new wave of spring weather would have been a phenomenal time to open. Imagine Sunday afternoon on that porch with the sun shining!

• abbsouth02/10 04:08 PM

don’t tease me.

• David02/12 03:35 PM

Please read our comment policy before impersonating others.
Joe = “John Rice?” - All of his comments (something like 25) have been negative comments about Boylan Bridge Brewpub. Take whatever weird personal beef you have somewhere else.

Al is not Andrew Leager- we have his(Andrew’s) IP address and they don’t match, plus Al asked for an urban outfitters downtown- You think Andrew even knows what that is?

We ask that commenters not use multiple user names and read our comment policy before commenting.

• mgd02/18 09:23 PM

Ok So why is this on their website?

http://www.boylanbridge.com/092605 N_O Article.pdf

I doesnt make them look good. The article was published on Sept 26 2005. <—- 2005

Summery of the article: They are to be done in about 1 year <—- 2006. Then states several reasons why the Brewpub is viable in that spot.

One of the I have quoted from the article: * Raleigh developer John Bruckel wants to break ground early next year on 94 condominiums across Boylan Avenue from Leager’s site.

So let me get this straight. Those luxury condos are completed and they started building when BB pub was suppose to be open?

I hate to be critical but how in the world does that happen. I realize that places never open on time but something went very wrong here.

Things that are awesome about this place:
* The view!
* The hand crafted beer
* NO Smoking!!!!
* Hopefully the food TBD

Things not so awesome:
* No TV <—theres a reason youve never seen a bar w/o one
* No “Lite” beer! People can knock it all they want. But it is what people want. Indeed it is and never will be confuse with a pint of anything hand crafted. They both have a purpose. One to get smashed for cheap and the other to enjoy with a meal like a glass of wine.

I think both of these will change. There is no choice it is what people want. Remember when the Saucer opened they didnt have “Lite” beer or liquor. Another bar to note is The Times. A somewhat upscale place that sells the most PBR in the south. Heck even Obama brought economic change here. He had a beer there and I think it was a PBR!

Sorry for the long rant but something doesnt seem right with this place. But indeed Ill be there.

• ADIREORBITTY06/01 02:13 PM

Buy Cheap Amoxil
And never take any medications for the diarrhea unless you have the doctor?s go signal on this.

• mgd06/01 05:39 PM

See they are already changing well adapting to what people want. THEY NOW HAVE MUSIC!

• ridwanzero01/07 08:33 AM

Experts have talked about this before. How many times have you read about the importance of ‘adding value’ for your audience? How many times have you read about ‘building trust’ with your readers/prospects?Many, many times. You know it well. Every marketing guru has spoken about this topic. I’m sick of hearing it. But it STILL bears repeating.
