Restaurants

UPDATED: Bu•ku Now Open in Downtown Raleigh

UPDATED: Bu•ku Now Open in Downtown Raleigh

Downtown Raleigh’s newest restaurant, bu•ku is now open for business. The restaurant will be located in the same spot as Fins in the Progress Energy Building on Davie Street in what they describe as the “quickly emerging, food-conscious Wilmington Street District”. I assume by this they mean Busy Bee, Gravy and Sitti which are located a few blocks North and actually on Wilmington Street. bu•ku hopes to bring “global street food” to the locals in a restaurant type that has little precedent in our area.

Dean, over at VarmintBites has more on the restaurant’s opening. According to Dean, as well as a few messages sent out by bu•ku, the restaurant will only be open for dinner for the first bit of time, opening for lunch later on. We are looking forward to checking out Chef William D’Auvray’s dishes which sound delicious (below is Dean’s quick summary of the menu).

The menu is an eclectic assortment of exotic soups, breads, and other street foods, focusing primarily on Asia, but with a great mix of other regions including Eastern Europe (pierogi), South America (empanada), and Mexico (cochinita). Everything is made in-house, including the fantastic cha siu bao, the steamed barbecued pork buns from China, and the paneer, served with kale, sweet onion and cardamom. Indian chapati and papadum are also made fresh, in house.

UPDATE: bu•ku has launched a new website today with a handful of new features, including news about their grand opening celebrations this weekend and a look at their menu options.

I’m curious to see the price points.  Once of the appeals of street food, in addition to how good it is so many places, is how cheap it is.  Obviously I don’t expect this restaurant to be cheap since it is upscale and full-service, but if it is overly expensive I’m not sure how well it will work.  It sounds tasty, though.

There is an entree section at the very end of the menu w/ six items on it - price range is $17 to $24.  Other than that, nothing on the menu is over $10.  There are a lot of $5 to $7 items.

A unique twist to the neighborhood of the growing downtown scene, bu.ku hosted a wonderful opening with a taste of great food and a variety of beers. Great things to come!

I am going to have to see if their lumpia compares to my mothers…. prob not… prob not..

I do like the street food concept through.

    do they have a website?

Ate there last night.  It was great as I expected.  Between two of us, we got 4 different dishes and each had beer and it was under 45.00.  Not bad, especially considering what I used to pay in that restaurant (when it was Fins) for dinner.

This will become a weekly spot for myself.

I also went there last night on a whim, and I agree with *gd* that it was as great as I expected (perhaps I should say “hoped”).  The place looks great, the food was unique and outstanding, and well-priced.  The drinks were great as well!

Will those outside the beltway support it?  Is it something that most of the city residence wanted and will support 3 years from now?

Went last night for dinner. Everything was absolutely amazing!!

I’ll miss Fins but Bu Ku seems promising. It’s shame some of Raleigh’s finer restaurants couldn’t survive the bad economy. Now I hear Frazier’s is closing too. Sad.

I have been waiting for a menu like this to hit our restaurant scene for ages. Can’t wait to try it.

Went on Thursday and it was lovely! The paneer & kale, pierogi and cochinita pipil were outstanding and the pinot noir was nice as well. I’ll be back again soon.

Went tonight and really enjoyed it! Atmosphere is fantastic, music was great, and the drinks were yummy.

Was a bit disappointed that the menu is very, very, very limited on the bar side - only 5 items. Since none of it is ‘bar food’ anyway, it was just a tease. We really wanted to stay on the bar side, since that is where the music is.

Got the roasted eggplant (warning: its served chilled, which was unexpected by everyone at the table) because it was the only vegetarian option on the bar side.
It was good, but with two vegetarians and a vegan at the table it would have been really nice to be able to try a few different things to share.

But I still plan to go back!

Oh and to Jason: I live out in N. Raleigh. So do all the people I went with, actually. I support downtown Raleigh shops and restaurants, and do hope it is successful. Why does everyone seem to think that us ‘outside the beltline’ people are afraid of downtown anyway?

Would like to see more Filipino items on the menu

  • gd02/08 02:12 PM

I went again this weekend.  I will be there again every week from here on out.
I could easily eat there 3 days a week which, I couldn’t do at Fins.
    I welcome this change!
