Cameron Bar and Grill - T.G.I. Not Village Draft House

image

Cameron Village has few good dining options that involve a tasty glass of wine, pint of beer, or stiff bourbon drink.  The Grape opened last year and quickly shriveled up.  It seems that Nelson’s has shut its doors but will be returning as Foster’s (the original name of the space).  Cafe Cyclo has been gone for years and the Village Draft House is, as a bartender recently told me, “just like a T.G.I.Friday’s but with the name Draft House stuck on it.” Not my words, but I can’t disagree with that statement.  Luckily, Cameron Bar and Grill, which opened this past week, has a more sleek, minimal presence and looks to be a nice addition to the neighborhood.

Cameron Bar and Grill is located in the space previously occupied by Fig’s and two doors down from the soon to be defunct Cherry Modern Furniture.  It officially opened at the end of this week after having a soft opening and staff party earlier in the week.  It is owned by the DeMartino family who also run North Ridge Pub and Cafe Tiramisu in Raleigh.  From the black front facade and canopy, the restaurant looks to have a nice attitude about the atmosphere of their space.  After walking through the front door, this atmosphere is represented very minimally but with a bit of class.

Cameron Bar and Grill attempts to hover between your average Americana bar and a higher class space like South or Vivace. The decor is a stripped down version of what you see in these restaurants; mirrors, modern lighting shades and wooden tables/seating.  The simplicity works and gives a comfortable feel to the almost intimate space.  As I have mentioned many times before when visiting new restaurants, one main thing that still haunts these spaces are the large televisions that distract from what the space is trying to accomplish.  Just think about how much nicer lighting, outdoor seating, silverware, or any design accent a restaurant could afford if they didn’t buy 6 large flat screen televisions (I lose count when trying to add up the ones at the Draft House).  Thousands of dollars and minds no longer distracted from dining.

The food varies from your average appetizers to steaks, sandwiches, and soups and salads.  There are even a handful of Italian entrees, which considering the owner’s Italian roots should be good.  That said, there are a variety of options on the menu, options for everyone in your crowd.  The Chicken Quesadilla was well seasoned and quite tasty, but the plain white bread with bland butter as a complimentary appetizer could have better paralleled the atmosphere.  Fiber anyone?  The menu is similar to the Village Draft House but Cameron looks to be a bit more upscale and stylized.  And the atmosphere couldn’t be any more different.  The noise in the Draft House, especially post expansion, is about as intense as a sitting on the tarmac watching planes go by at the airport.  Cameron didn’t have this.  It was as peaceful as a spring Saturday afternoon should be.  Outdoor seating, which is coming soon, would have been the icing on the cake.

With a great selection of beers and wines, the bar was stocked with options.  The staff are quite friendly and Dan, the bartender, told me that “I would never have to wait for a beer here.” With a slogan like Eat. Drink. Relax. I couldn’t help but do all three while I was at Cameron.  But, once the word gets out, I’m sure Cameron will be renting the rest the empty Fig’s space and expanding.  That seems to be what happens when anything in the village gets popular (i.e. Village Deli and Village Draft House).  Let’s hope not.  The village could use a similar, yet alternative version of The Village Draft House and Cameron might just be it.  They even offer free WiFi!

Looking forward to giving it a try! I love the atmosphere and outdoor dining at the Draft House personally, but my boyfriend HATES it so hopefully Cameron will give us an agreeable solution grin

    Red Oak + Free WiFi?

    Sounds like a winning combination.

I can’t tell from the picture - are there any local beers on draft? I know Red Oak is semi-local (and I love their Battlefield Black), but I’d like to see some brews from Big Boss or CBC.

I can’t wait to try this place!

Ok, I checked it out last night. The atmosphere is very relaxing; I love the old pictures of Cameron Village pre-blue-bubble and the quiet music.

The food however, left much to be desired. The Reuben was lackluster. The “black bean soup” while good, was really just a bowl of warmed black beans. My husband’s tuna melt was, reportedly, “bad.”

After we ate, I overheard a waitress recommend the Italian food to diners at another table. Maybe that’s the way to go. The sandwiches, not so much.

The hours seem a bit strange to me. If it’s truly a bar, they should stay open later than 11p.m. None the less it looks to be a good addition to Cameron Village, and I’ll be sure to check it out.

After going to the Cameron a few times, I have to say it is pretty amazing.
All restaurants go through the first couple of weeks getting everything correct - especially fresh, cook to order food.
I am so happy to see this kind of place in Cameron Village.  It reminds me of the kind of establishment you would see in New York or Chicago.
I LOVE the idea of the large old black and white photos on the walls - you should go to see that if nothing else.
Thank you DeMartino family for bringing this to the downtown area!

If the Village Drafthouse is TGI Friday’s, what does that make this place?  Bonefish Grill?

  • Jedidiah05/15 10:12 AM

I had the Manicotti last night and it was great.  I was told they have been crowded many nights since opening.  Last night there was barely and empty seat in the place.

Its funny that you mentioned the big TV’s at the bar. It drives me crazy too and I had just written my review of Cameron Bar and its big TV’s before reading your review. smile

I swear there must be some restaurant owner’s magazine preaching the power of TV’s for sales but I think it does nothing but ruin the mood of a good place.

Ate there not long ago for lunch on a Saturday.  Wasn’t impressed really.  It was so loud you couldn’t hear the person sitting across from you.  I wasn’t expecting quite and violins mind you but I also don’t like having to yell a whole conversation.  While there were a lot of choices on the menu, the food was ok and our waitress wasn’t particularly attentive.  Nothing that would make me go back again.

haven’t been yet, but am wondering, if they are recommending the Italian food, can anybody say how the Italian compares to Piccola Italia?  I am a long time P.I. fan, and if it is much the same food, but more expensive, couldn’t see any reason to start going to Camerons instead.

I highly recommend the shrimp burger. It’s not quite the same as the Big Oak drive-in down at Atlantic Beach, but it’s still pretty darn good. The service and atmosphere were also impeccable.

This place is by far the best thing foodwise to happen in Cameron Village since the close of Szygys (sp?) almost a decade ago. Cameron Village has long been without decent dining options. We ate there last night, 4 of us, and had crabcake, portabello mushroom sandwich, grilled chicken, and shrimp cocktail. One of us had been in twice before and vouched for the restaurant’s consistency. We were delighted to find something open that late where the service and food were so good after 10 p.m. The place is spotless (restrooms included), nicely decorated, acoustics are good, lighing is just right (not garish but easy to read the menu), the AC is just right (3 of us were women and were not freezing), the wait staff is pleasant and efficient; the prices reasonable; the wine list pretty good. The people who complained above must have gotten some early opening experiences. I really think this place is very good. Hope it does well.
