As was hinted at over a year ago and confirmed in April, Raleigh will host the 2011 NHL All-Star Game on Sunday, Jan. 30, 2011 at the RBC Center. Today, the NHL and the Hurricanes have released preliminary imagery and plans for how the game will be marketed in Raleigh, including a massive 5,000 sq. foot banner on the coinciding RBC Tower on Fayetteville Street in downtown. The banner will feature a few NHL All-Stars, including Hurricane star Eric Staal. The window treatment should be up this coming weekend for Raleigh Wide Open 5.

“The primary color of the logo is a tribute to the Hurricanes and their legion of fans, the ‘Caniacs,’ who display their team pride by wearing red during home games at the RBC Center. Also, the holding shape is consistent with the Hurricanes’ primary logo. With the 2011 NHL All-Star Game being played in the state capital of North Carolina, Raleigh, and the popularity of the Hurricanes stretching well beyond the Triangle, inspiration for the banners along the top and bottom of the logo is derived from the official flag of the state of North Carolina.”

Interesting that they’d put Pat Kane on the poster instead of Hawks captain and playoff MVP Jonathan Toews.  I’d assume that choice was made to get an American on the poster.

I hope AT&T has their network ready for the influx of visitors! If the U2 concert was anything to go by, I project an epic fail…

The U2 concert pulled three times the number of people that this will.  The boon here is that a great number of the people who will be in town for the ASG are millionaires/billionaires.

hmm, hopefully the banner is applied to the inside face of glass to the rbc tower…otherwise it would violate the city’s sign ordinance and council wouldn’t ‘dare’ make an excemption, would they?

I like it, but I wish it was a little more colorful.
