Dorton Arena is about to see more action and excitement than it’s last Gun and Knife Show. This Saturday, the Carolina All-Stars face their biggest opponent since playing in the WFTDA National Tournament last November - the #1 nationally ranked Gotham Girls Roller Derby from New York City. While Gotham’s impressive record, roster and talent can not be debated, this will be their first venture down south to play Carolina, who they haven’t played against in over three years. But as many know, Carolina’s reputation of being the underdog is equally matched with their reputation for ousting #1 teams, as they did to the Kansas City Roller Warriors in 2007.
With tournament season around the corner and all teams vying for rankings, rest assured both teams will pull no punches. Will crowd favorite Holly Wanna Crackya out jam, jamming phenom Suzy Hotrod? Will Princess America school Bonnie Thunders on the new south? Will Trudy Struction knock some sense into Barbara Ambush? Will there be a Top 40 showdown between Kelly Clocks’em and Beyonslay? If the speed, agility and physical intensity of this revived sport doesn’t catch your attention, the skaters will.
After that match, the Carolina Bootleggers will be welcoming River City (Richmond, VA), in a rematch of March 22nd’s bout in Richmond. The Bootleggers eked out a victory in overtime for which River City will no doubt be seeking revenge. With a double-header and some serious talent being showcased, you won’t want to miss this event.
And just as a heads up, with Carolina hosting the WFTDA Eastern Regional Tournament, this game will be a preview of the high-ranked talent and athleticism that will be rolling into Dorton Arena for three full days this September. Get ready, Raleigh!
