Finally, Cary has taken a hint from almost everyone (Remember this article?) that has attended a concert at Koka Booth and upped the decibel level. Triangle Music states that the Cary Town Council (is Cary a City or Town?) voted to raise the decibel level from 92 to 95 (which is what it was for the fabulous Phoenix/Love Language show that everyone praised). Good thing because I was never going back to a show there (and neither were many bands) unless the decibel level matched the ticket price. Revenue played a big part in this I’m sure. Thanks for listening to your surroundings Cary, so we’ll come back to Cary to listen to some of the great music you have been bringing to town (or city).

“It goes to 11”
raising the power level by 3dB is equivalent to doubling the output.
3dB does not double the perceived volume. A 3dB increase in SPL equates to doubling the power required from the power amp. If they were to increase the SPL by 10dB, then it would sound twice as loud.
A 3 dB upgrade is a big deal for a sound engineer as well as the town. It most likely means that you’re changing out amplifiers and possibly loudspeakers as well - there is a cost involved. Not quite as simple as ‘turning up the level’. Most live sound systems of that scale operate on very tight margins to shave cost. 3dB can mean the system is 2x the price. I’m not privy to the details of the system, but if I were to quote that upgrade, given that I would have to replace the entire system, it would probably run in the $30-50k range.
Adam & Mike are both correct, but another way to say it is: A volume increase of 3db is the average increase required for the human ear to even notice the change.
