Centennial Campus Library Architects Win International Competition

Snøhetta, the architecture firm who will design the future Jim Hunt Library, have just won an international design competition for the King Abdulaziz Center for Knowledge and Culture in Saudi Arabia. The project will include a museum, library, theater, cinema, as well as several other components.

We haven’t seen any designs yet for the new library, which will serve as the focal point of NCSU’s Centennial Campus, but there’s an ongoing exhibition on the “approach, vision, process, and values” of Snohetta at NC State’s DH HIll Library.

The NCSU Snøhetta exhibit is open to the public during the following hours (through the end of the fall semester) :

Monday through Thursday: 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m
Friday: 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Saturday: 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Sunday: 1:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.

    Interesting.

I sure hope to see pigs flying, fat ladies singing and a frozen underworld the day NCSU reveals their plans for the library.  Indeed, it will be a new day if NCSU is able to pull off something as bold as this....

Hmm… Something tells me the NC State Library won’t be directly financed with oil money.

With Centennial campus’s public/private partnerships… it’ll probably be largely financed by Tech companies.

    Isn’t that almost as good?

$$ is always helpful, but its not a necessity in order to do something unconventional.

i am excited about this project. and i agree with JZ. now what if NCSU learned to do something unconventional with some of our bricks?! these guys in New Delhi do: http://www.anagramarchitects.com/

I expect that we will see the most interesting design allowed under the budget restrictions.  Like was stated before, there is no oil money financing the Jimmy Hunt Library and I’ve heard the budget is pretty small to start with.  I’m excited to see that Cline Design or J Davis weren’t picked to do it and we actually have a world reknowned architecture group working in Raleigh so while we may not get spectacular, at least it won’t be blah.

clients have a larger influence over design than you suggest.....there’s a two way street there and I still say let’s see how far from “blah” NCSU is comforatable with going before we proclaim this a slam dunk....
