A couple of years ago Cherry Bounce was simply a historical alcoholic drink that was consumed at Raleigh’s first “bar” Isaac Hunter’s Tavern. That drink has been resurrected by a few bars in town and the drink’s name is also being used to serve as a backbone for branding a local music fest. The Cherry Bounce Fest debuted last year during Raleigh Wide Open III, cranking two days worth of music out on a stage on Hargett Street. Despite the hurricane and pouring rain, the music continued and the party kept punching.
This year, Cherry Bounce is taking it once step further by spreading the music out across a full week and six different downtown Raleigh venues. It will be wrapped up by, once again, a full days worth of music on a Hargett Street main stage on Saturday October 24th, and will be paralleled by Raleigh Wide Open IV (aka the opening of the new city plaza on Fayetteville Street).

Most of the showcases during the week are organized by local media outlets (including New Raleigh’s showcase that Berkeley on Friday night) and will mostly be focused on local acts. The main stage however will be a mix of local and national acts, including a couple of international bands as well as The Hood Internet (who remixed The Rosebuds a while back) and Man Man (who destroy all expectations on stage with their animated and lively performance). I recommend you check out some or all of the showcases, but if there’s one band on this list not to miss, it is definitely Man Man, face paint and all.
New Raleigh will host a showcase on Friday night at The Berkeley Cafe featuring The T’s, A Rooster for the Masses, Colossus, and The Infamous Sugar. Price and more information coming soon.

Even though Isaac Hunter might have served the Cherry Bounce at his tavern, too, the Cherry Bounce is significant to Raleigh, b/c Joel Lane served them to legislators deciding where the capital city should reside. Mr. Lane was in competition with Isaac Hunter for the land where the city was to be established. As the story goes, Joel Lane won b/c of his potent cocktail, the Cherry Bounce.
Man Man is superb, I wish I could make it. Wonder if I can get my fiancee to push our wedding back by a week or something.
Matt—You don’t have to choose between Man Man and marriage! Set your sights on Cherry Bounce and we’ll figure a way to get you hitched right there. With all those rock’n'roll preachers on hand, someone can surely make your union official. Much fun to come! Thank you, New Raleigh, for your support and that terrific showcase on Friday night!
What’s in a Cherry Bounce cocktail?
TBD is playing Cherry Bounce twice? Awesome, I love TBD, they rock!
Funny…I have two quarts of Cherry Bounce “marinating” in a dark, cool corner of my house from this year’s cherry pickings. Cherry Bounce is older than this country(George Washington had a recipe) and is relatively easy to make.
1) Use a container with pressure stopper (fermintation may build gas) like a bottle with ceramic stopper
2) For every quart of rum, brandy, or whiskey (choose whiskey or rum, brandy makes it something awful), add one cup of sugar
3) Simmer the liquid enough to disolve the sugar
4) stuff the container with fresh cherries. You’re supposed to leave the pits in, if pitted add two teaspoons of almond extract
5) pour the liquid into the container, cap it, and let stand for 6 months (or three if you cannot wait) in a cool, dark place.
6) Strain and serve. Cherry bounce
Don’t boil it, that just sends the alcohol off. The sugar will dissolve on its own (faster if you turn the bottles every week or so).
.
Also, you don’t need a pressure stopper because rum and whiskey are not going to allow further fermentation—alcohol content is way too high for anything to survive. Mason or jelly jars or any kind of bottle are fine.
Gross Ghost !!!!!
Caught them two weekend ago with SpiderBags at the NiteLite.
Totally fun.
Ahhhhhh!!! Man Man is one of my favorite bands! This is awesome…and unexpected.
Everyone keeps asking about The Hood Internet. You can check them out here: http://www.vimeo.com/5677672
Be sure to check out Peggy Sue. They’re on local label Yep Roc and coincidentally rad.
