Chubby’s Tacos: Suburban Tacos for the Urban Soul

Disclaimers:

1.  I eat Mexican food, or a variety of what could be called Mexican, at least twice a week. Many weeks it is much more. (No details needed)

2.  I despise strip malls and most everything in them.

The thought of combining these two things seems like a conflict of interest. Then again, Dos Taquitos on Creedmoor is one of my favorite restaurants in the Raleigh area. More confessions: I’m a bit of an urban snob. I rarely frequent restaurants that aren’t in the downtown grid. Maybe it’s a proximity issue, maybe it’s, as mentioned, a highbrow way to snub restaurants that are sporadically located throughout the sprawling city that is Raleigh. But, as discussed extensively on last week’s Chatter episode, Raleigh does have a handful of exquisite strip mall restaurants. Some are more upscale, and others, like Chubby’s are just there to add damn good food and a bit of character funk into otherwise bland shopping strips.

Chubby’s Tacos is located in the same parking lot loaded strip center that houses Sushi Thai, 2nd City Grill, a Starbucks, McDonald’s, Bear Rock Grill, Tuesday Morning and a Food Lion. Aside from Sushi Thai and 2nd City, chains litter the area, making it very unpleasant to visit for an urban snob like me. Sushi Thai is one of the cheapest, quality, Thai restaurants in the area. Now, it has a worthy neighbor that rivals its hidden charm.

Neons and an outline of a Speedy Gonzales look-a-like with a taco in hand announce Chubby’s shotgun location (just over 1,000 sq. feet) at the corner of the suburban brick village, beaming to pedestrians, simply wanting some milk from the grocer, “Come here for bad ass tacos.” The truth is that while very simple and precise, the tacos at Chubby’s are indeed fantastic. They rival many of the taco trucks that spread around urban centers every day, shelling out cheap, authentic, tacos to construction workers and truck spotters alike. If I didn’t have a full time job, I’d probably become a taco truck groupie, following them around the country in search of the perfect taco.

Another piece of comparison to Chubby’s Tacos is the style and taste of almost every Taqueria in Austin, TX. From El Pastor to Carne Asada, Chubby’s style is a step above most in the area and on a level with many that I have had in Austin (although Migas would be a fantastic addition). The Tilapia is unique and tasty, the Carne Asada and El Pastor are both very flavorful, not to mention the 8+ homemade salsas at the salsa bar in the rear of the space. There are over 15 different fillings for the tacos as well as quesadillas, gorditas and more to choose from. A very thorough and option-filled menu.

It doesn’t take much to create character and charm. Many places in urban settings as well as suburban ones try too hard to brand themselves with themes and lavish decorations, menus and (ahem) “style”. Chubby’s does the opposite. From the pepper-themed table covers to the margarita and piña colada machines, Chubby’s knows how to turn simplicity into richness. And many may blush at the sight. of the “Have You Had a Chubby Today?” t-shirts.

The original Chubby’s in Durham opened only a year ago and it’s spin-off seems to be thriving. Chubby’s Tacos is the new king of the Western corridor of Raleigh strip mall restaurants. Try a taco or 10, it’s good for your soul, urban and suburban alike.

Really cool piece, Jed. I have never been to Chubby’s but after reading all the comments to the strip mall poll and now seeing these pictures that you shot, I will have to try it. Those booths look pretty cool and the bar also seems like a great place to put a few tacos back with some cold Mexican beer. And it’s really not that far away (inside the beltline, even - Lake Boone shopping center). I beleive the Raleigh location opened earlier this year so it is still fairly new. The first year is the most important time for a new restaurant, so it’s nice to see people spreading the word about great local spots that are off the beaten path.

I will state this again - stick to the original in Durham. Urban snob you may be but you lack a discerning taste for Mexican food. Perhaps it would serve you to go back to Austin and taste their tacos again. Having grown up in Southern California and feasted on tacos my whole life and consumed them off of famous tacos trucks in California and off of carts in Mexico, I would not call the Raleigh Chubby’s “fantastic.” They are not even close the a taco truck standards. The Durham Chubby’s is great but your review will surely lead true Taco Lovers astray.

Priscilla in “Jitterbug Perfume” was searching for the perfect taco…..

Mysteriously,  “Having grown up in Southern California and feasted on tacos my whole life “...
we are still fortunate enough to have you grace our state with your intellect and taste.
Please, next lead us on a instructional discussion as to the merits of the modern day Red hot Chili peppers vs the early 80’s line up.

We are not in Southern California, we are not in Mexico, we are not in Durham, we are in Raleigh, NC. We are reading a blog called New Raleigh. I am going to Cubby’s Tacos today and I am going to enjoy hell out of that place.

  • TSnow2760405/16 11:47 AM

Without disparaging Chubby’s I will say that when I am in the mood for stripmall Mexican, I will continue to go to Salsa Fresh.  Still the king in my book.

  • Erin05/16 11:52 AM

Well you can’t compare CalMex, InteriorMex (more fresh fish and veggies) and TexMex (cowboy cookout flava) too closely…they’re different beasts, really.

I moved up to Raleigh a few weeks ago from Austin and have been on the lookout for decent Mexican food (fingers crossed). The write-up sounds good and the pics are cute, so Chubby’s is now on the ‘to try’ list along with ‘Dos Taquitos’.

  • Kevin05/16 02:35 PM

I gave this place one chance, and it was so terrible I’ll never go back.  Maybe it was an off night, but first impressions are everything.  Three different tacos and a burrito, they were all jokes.

  • jci05/16 03:01 PM

tortillas:  lukewarm and falling apart - didn’t seem homemade
meat:  (asada and pastor) mildly seasoned and dry
salsas: decent variety, ok to good.

I left unimpressed and hope that this was an off day.  For my taco fix yesterday I took it to Garner to El Toro which was much more satisfying.

  • Chad05/16 04:46 PM

    Two words… Chubby’s sucks!

  • Chris05/16 04:51 PM

Strip mall, sure.  But Suburban? That’s harsh.  By that logic, North Hills(not that I like it) is suburbia.

  • Fred05/16 05:30 PM

    @Chris:
Yeah, wycliff road is suburban. North Hills is too. So is my neighborhood, University Park. And most of Raleigh.

  • km05/16 05:51 PM

Whoa…JS way to get your panties in a bunch. The author started with comparisons to other geographic regions and taco trucks. You go eat that Chubby’s taco and you enjoy it. I’ll go to Durham and enjoy mine more. Hehe.

  • Chris05/16 06:41 PM

Moving from Austin to Raleigh this summer. Love the food scene here, so this post makes me happy! Can’t wait to try it!

  • Jim05/16 09:59 PM

Is Chubby’s where 19th hole used to be?

  • downtown foodie05/16 11:26 PM

I have heared that there is a new “baja” restaurant that’s going to be on Blount in the Mordecai / Halifax neighborhood.  Anybody know what/ when / who about the place.  And for a Raleigh taco place, Chubby’s is good.

  • jfo05/17 11:37 AM

There are plenty of “real” mexican places here in raleigh. if you guys haven’t noticed, we have a large population of mexicans and they are not eating the combo plates at El Rodeo.

Two places off the top of my head .... Los Cuates, I like the drive-through on Capital, but they have another location on WF rd.  Cheap & delicious

Tacos Y Mariscos Vallarta on Capital, which is also open 24 hrs.  They have great seafood.

Also just last night I spotted a very busy taco truck off off hodges & wf road. i think it is a sat night spot, i haven’t seen it there on my way home b/f.  I love the taco truck at the flea market mall as well.

For those who are whining about they can’t get this, that and the other in Raleigh, I whole heartedly advice you to GO HOME!  IF it was better there, then why did you leave?

  • MMI05/17 01:31 PM

    Jim, yes, it is.

  • TacosRus05/17 02:30 PM

Chubby’s doesn’t come close to being as good as Taco Bell…..seriously.

  • MMI05/17 03:37 PM

Just for clarification, TR, did you mean that as praise for Taco Bell, or damnation for Chubby’s?

  • salley05/17 08:33 PM

first, a high five to luke for that comment. brilliant.

second:  i didn’t grow up in california and i didn’t live in austin, and i hope i aint no snob, but as much as it pains me to say it, i think the chubby’s in durham is better than the one in raleigh. i’ll give the raleigh one another chance, but i have to agree with km.  i’ll stick to los cuates for the time being, while rooting for chubby’s to improve.

  • Christian05/17 09:36 PM

Chubby’s is the bomb, ya’ll! I just ate there for the first time tonight, and my first impression, besides the cool decor, is just how cheap this place is. Most tacos are $2, and you get rice, beans, and chips for another $2. Margaritas on the rocks are only $3.50. Also the variety of tacos is impressive; they have everything from chicken, beef, pork, ahi tuna, shrimp, etc… I went with the al pastor (pork marinated in pinnapple) and tinga (chicken stewed in spices). Plus the salsa bar features seven homemade salsas so you can truly craft the perfect taco to suit your personal taste. I don’t understand how anyone can hate on this place! (And just to rebut the comment criticizing the soft corn tortillas for falling apart - either hold the taco from the bottom or substitute flour tortillas or hard corn shells instead for no extra charge).

  • Hunts05/18 09:28 AM

Wow, seems like there are some seriously differing views on Chubby’s!  Well good!  The more argument there is, the more publicity and overall chatter there is, and I hope it leads to more success.  I live in the area and just recently tried the place and I love it.  Simple, well laid out despite “hole in the wall” size/location, good menu options, well explained for those of us who aren’t self proclaimed “experts”, and for my money, one DAMN good burrito, with some excellent salsa choices to top it off.  Good luck, Chubby’s!  You keep makin em, Ill keep eatin em.

  • Kate05/18 10:26 AM

    “...rivals it’s hidden charm…”

    No apostrophe please!!

Thanks for the review.  Is the 19th Hole gone, then?

  • Jess05/18 12:12 PM

    YUMMY!!!!!!!!

  • VaNC05/18 12:49 PM

I live near Chubby’s and find it very uneven….which is likely why we are seeing uneven reviews.  Sometimes it is great, other times the tortillas are dry, the meat is dry…just bad.

I greatly prefer Los Cuates or Fonda Y Birriera Jellisco out off Falls of the Neuse in the Walmart parking lot (or is it a kmart?).  It is more authenic and more consistent.  Their tacos al pastor are amazing.

Plus, I really miss 19th HOle…not the last owners, but the originally owners, where you got great “chips” and fried bologna sandwiches, and great greasy burgers.  It used to be packed all the time at lunch…not sure why it went downhill and closed with the new owners.

  • gd05/18 01:20 PM

VaNC:  I eat at the mexican restaurant in the WalMart parking lot cause I work right by there, but I cannot say I like it better.

I am a big fan of Chubby’s Tacos - both Raleigh and Durham - I can’t tell a difference between either of those, but I love everything I have gotten from both locations..

  • MMI05/18 01:58 PM

Kate, I think it has been gone for well over a year now.  The signage stayed up for a while, though, so it was misleading.

  • Kevin05/18 02:47 PM

I wonder, if New Raleigh didn’t like it, would they still write it?

  • howboutafresca05/18 05:10 PM

chubby’s was pretty good when i went there and the guacatillo sauce was awesome. salsa fresh is my fav, but this is another great option with a vast menu.

  • Karen A. Mann05/18 10:36 PM

We checked it out tonight, and I thought it was pretty good—especially considering the tacos are only $2. The taco-truck fare is probably a little better, but Chubby’s has the advantage of alcohol and salsa bar (my bf and I both liked “Chubby’s Salsa” best). I had the mango margarita, which was pretty good, but the sangria is basically the same sangria you get at the grocery store, with a lime and an orange thrown in for garnish. Overall, not bad. will definitely try it again.

  • richardfoc05/19 12:55 AM

Can somebody explain why people are saying the Durham location is better than the Raleigh location? Aren’t they both owned by the same folks? Aren’t the menus the same? What gives? I don’t get it.

  • Charlie05/19 03:01 PM

I ate there a couple weeks ago and it was GREAT and I plan on going back. The tacos were good and there was a huge variety of really tasty salsas. I feel like people would be a lot less harsh on it if it weren’t in a strip mall and in a more “hipper” area. Gimme a break

  • Lake Boone Anchor05/20 12:03 PM

Why did the 19th Hole close down ?

Perhaps it was the ‘STD’ theme nights that they would have.
“ …Gonorrhea and Syphilis patrons drink for free…in the john…”
Or maybe it was the aggro bar staff that appeared to be developing some form of bathtub crank in their off hours.

Every time, I would end my night there,  I was greeted with, “ How did you find out about this place? “  or   “Why exactly did you come here? “.    Paranoia being the overwhelming theme.

    Something sketchy going on.

That place would have been ideal for any underage neighborhood residents.
(  Featured on the August 2005 episode of COPS   )

    THAT place was NEW RALEIGH.
    Loco Pops?  Foundation?  Busy Bee?
I think not.  Drag me threw the mud in the back alley behind Crawley’s and then serve me day old coffee at the 19th Hole.

  • Chris05/21 01:43 PM

“Can somebody explain why people are saying the Durham location is better than the Raleigh location? Aren’t they both owned by the same folks? Aren’t the menus the same? What gives? I don’t get it.”

I think the overall issue that I can understand from all the comments is that the Raleigh location suffers from a lack of consistency - which may not be surprising as the ownership learns to manage more than one location.

  • JDub05/29 12:51 AM

Yes, Chubby’s Tacos are owned by the same two guys with different atmospheres.

  • Josh06/11 02:48 PM

Chubby’s Rocks.  The Habanero Salsa could be a bit hotter but flavor was all there.  I see they are about to start serving breakfast - Frittatas and Break Burritos, perhaps?  My 6-year old enjoyed his Tinga Taco.

Get over your downtown grid thing, folks - Raleigh is Raleigh is Raleigh. ITB/OTB/Midtown/yada yada.  Whatever.  Go eat some good tacos.

  • rhissidly08/13 05:08 PM

What’s up, is there anybody else here?
If there are any real people here looking to network, leave me a post.
Oh, and yes I’m a real person LOL.

    Later,

  • CEM09/02 07:07 AM

I haven’t been, but I’ve heard good things. Apparently it doesn’t compare to the authentic taquerias in the area, but it’s a good option for nervous gringos.
