As mentioned back in March, the Hook Up space at the corner of St. Mary and Johnson streets was (possibly) turning into a family style Italian restaurant. We now know the name will be Ciago’s and the theme will be Pizza, Pasta and Ale. Let’s hope it lasts a bit longer than its previous tenants.

Glenwood South Pizza Ciago The Hook Up
Thought it was common knowledge that this building sits on top of a Native American burial ground…
this would actually be a great location for some condos!
Does anyone really care? Hopefully it won’t be another mediocre shit hole with weak food and crappy beer.
It’s amazing that Raleigh hasn’t yet reached pizza capacity.
Regardless, it would be nice to see something last in that building, and it seems like pizza places have better track records than most. I wish them good luck!
Might look more welcoming if they take down that bizarre fence. Looks like anyone going in or out should be wearing handcuffs.
..and I will continue to never eat at any place that exists there.
Mellow Mushroom, Sauced, Bada Bing, and now Ciago’s. Just what the Glenwood South area needed…more pizza.
Well at least this one is between my house and Glenwood so I can get some pizza before I get to the place with all the pizza
This place will fail and I will be there to dance on its pathetic grave. Death to all new business ventures in Raleigh that are not vegan co ops that play music exclusively by bearded musicians. *adjusts panties*
hopefully they’ll cater more to the pasta side than the pizza side. wishful thinking
sauced should be shut down cause its horrible!
I agree, do not see how another pizza place is a good idea and hope they have some focus on pasta. However is opening this must have their own funding, not sure what business plan could support another pizza palace with the surrounding competition. I do hope they upgrade decor(and agree, fence removed), but will try not to pass judgment till I taste for myself.
Why wouldn’t I at least try a place that will have pizza and beer. I don’t think the location is cursed, that’s a silly idea. Parking is easier than most places and it’s only out of the way compared to the main drag a couple blocks over. If the food is good and the prices are reasonable I think something will def. work in this bldg
all black van sucks
Who the heck cares if it’s another pizza place. How about you people at least try the food when it opens before you rag all over it. If the market supports it, then there’s a reason for its existence. Also at least someone is trying to utilize space that would just be sitting there empty otherwise.
Don’t like it then get your own funding and open your own darn restaurant. Cry me a river.
You people don’t understand. We need a place (like our secret clubhouse The Rockford) where we can go make fun of the outsiders. This is not that place.
Leave the sign and fence up and turn it into a swinger’s club. Three restaurants have already failed there.
Agree with DPK and Sarcastic Little Whiny Bitch. You don’t have to “choose a side” when it comes to mainstream and offbeat.. at least, you’re missing out if you do. Why? Because plenty of offbeat places suck horribly while mainstream places can be good and fun. And vice versa, of course.
Also, enough about the location being cursed.. its like DPK said the market will support the thing thing at any location.. clearly there are thousands of rooftops nearby and consumers on the strip - time will tell if this particular concept works there or not.
Tear it down and build a Ruby Tuesdays!
What kind of place should it be?
Notice no one ever complains that we now have another restaurant that serves fish tacos…
As long as a place has food that isn’t crappy and/or can’t keep an A rating and a staff that actually gives a crap about customer service, I’d go there.
I’d rather see a Ruby Tuesday’s than an empty building.
We certainly don’t need more pizza in the hood but a restaurant with traditional pasta options and a casual atmosphere is more than welcome! I still miss Cool Mountain (the original tenant of that space).
“We need a place (like our secret clubhouse The Rockford) where we can go make fun of the outsiders. This is not that place.”
We could hang out there just to be ironic. Then we could bitch about how awful it is whenever there’s an uncomfortable lull in conversation.
Rumor has it that the previous owners of Two Guys on Hillsbrough Street are running the show!
“Open” sign is now up at the newly opened Ciago’s on the corner of St. Mary’s and Johnson Streets. Will give it a try over the next day or two - look for my review soon.
I ate there. It was awful. The pizza was almost raw. Basically inedible. and I wasted too much money on it. Too bad. I had never heard about the indian burial ground…....
Chris Candes is a top notch restaurateur and the food is, as befitting the Two Guys legacy, outstanding.Chris makes much of his fare with his own hands, from scratch.Dined there last night; the pizza and salad were perfection and a very modest price.
Good food, good beer, good service - and I didnt have the pizza! Wow! they have other food….......and you silly little vegan can eat there too
While I appreciated the thinner crust, the pizza was bad and the calamari was horrible. If you are looking for giant servings of pasta or Peroni on tap, this is your place. Otherwise there are numerous other options within a two-mile radius that offer better food at a lower price.
Ate there last night and it was fantastic!!
I ate at Ciago’s earlier this evening and it was HORRIBLE! My husband and I ordered the calamari as an appetizer. It was overcooked, to say the least. The outside was too greasy, and the inside was hard and too tough to chew. The salad that came with our entree was your typical bagged salad from a grocery store. However, the homemade salad dressing was great! Since Ciago’s boasts of its Italian roots, we asked for some “fresh baked Italian bread.” I was surprised to see hoagie roll that had been in the bread warmer too long. The waitress did not hesitate to bring the cheap tasting olive oil for dipping. So we could get a good sampling of Ciago’s favorites, we ordered the baked ziti and the seafood linguine. The Ziti was a dressed up sloppy joe sauce with noodles and mediocre cheeses. The linguine did not have ANY flavor or seasonings. The taste slightly resembled dish water. If you decide to dine at Ciago’s, make sure you order a glass of water…. their only decent offering.
this place better get better fast cause it sucks now.not even average, pretty lame at best.
I Have had two meals here. Both were quite good. The Bar is a great space. Looking forward to enjoying some football there.. They also have some good wines..
