Citified and Gray Young Play Tir Na Nog

Get ready for an aural sensation this Thursday, June 18 when Tir Na Nog and WKNC host Citified and Gray Young at the Local Beer Local Band weekly feature.   Admission is FREE, and enjoy draft specials on North Carolina brews.

Recently featured by WRAL’s Greg Hutchinson in a video, Raleigh’s Gray Young sculpts simple yet dense soundscapes.  Several transcendent lyrical sketches add flavor to contrasting instrumental moods, taking the listener from troughs of ambient melancholy that crest into soaring flourishes.   A pleasant tension is created or builds in most of the songs, many of which evolve musically from variations of a repeated root theme. Gray Young’s swirling “atmospheric post-rock” (a la Tristeza and Maserati) conjures natural, elemental imagery with songs such as “Tilling the Wind,” “Cavalcade for Sundown” and “Aurora.”  Check out the title track to their CD release, “Firmament” mixed by Jerry Kee.

Kee, whose client list is the stuff of local legend, also had his hand in Citified’s five song EP “Absence” which surfaced late last month on Eskimo Kiss Records.  Grayson Currin’s smooth review of “Absence” in The Indy describes the ethereal echoing guitars which may remind one of early The Church (without the Australian accents). Citified is sharing “Pencil_Me_In” with New Raleigh, and at Mann’s World you’ll find an MP3 of “Landlocked” in addition to some other goodies.  Come on out to Tir Na Nog Thursday night to sample the bands live for yourself, for FREE!

I am pretty certain NC pints are now 3.50 for a pint for Thursday nights.  They usually serve you a $4 20 oz. unless you ask for a pint.
