Jam band O.A.R. usually plays their gigs at the Koka Booth Amphitheater in Cary but this summer they’ll be coming through Downtown Raleigh to the new Boutique Amphitheater in front of the Convention Center on August 10th. Acoustic guitarist and singer Citizen Cope, who I think has now played every single music venue in the Triangle in the past 5 years, will open the show. Tickets will go on sale on Friday, April 16th.
Last week, the Honda Civic Tour with Paramore and Tegan and Sara was announced as the first booked show at the under-construction outdoor venue.

Downtown Raleigh Raleigh Boutique Amphitheater Live Musc
Man, they’re just booking the best of ‘em
I hate the usual negativity/trolling around here…
...having said that, these first 2 shows are not…um, good. Also, I really hate the name “boutique”. Is that really the name?
I’m all for a new music venue in Raleigh and am excited about both the venue and the acts they are bringing.
However, “Downtown Raleigh Boutique Amphitheater” is perhaps the worst name I’ve ever heard.
Ok, that is a bad name for the venue, who thought of that ?? No disrespect to the bands mentioned or their fans, but are they serious? I thought this was a LIVENATION venue, and they are opening with Paramore to open the first show there ?? Ok, the must have ran out of funds or something, because I was disappointed to hear that, I know that it is a smaller venue, but I have seen better act come to downtown live and that is free.
I had no idea it was named the “Boutique” Amphitheater. That’s the crappiest name for a venue ever.
Actually I just did some research and the official name currently is the “Raleigh Amphitheatre and Festival Site” according to the City of Raleigh’s public affairs Director Jayne Kirkpatrick.
Concert promoters are incorrectly using the “Raleigh Boutique Amphitheatre” name. So how about we all agree to just stop calling it that.
Additionally there is not an official name because they have not sold the naming rights yet.
O.A.R.‘s not too shabby.
I’m sorry….but O.A.R. blows and is for high schoolers. Everything about them absolutely sucks. They’re like Dave Matthews Band’s little brother who sucks worse.
i may not have finished college if i heard “crazy game of poker” one more time. I wanted to hurt anyone that called them a “jam band” because they had a song that lasted over 10 minutes.
Anyone could have a song that lasted over 10 minutes if they played the same 3 chords over and over. I have the same feeling towards dmb fans, btw. OAR sucks…and they have always sucked. wow, i got worked up by something with “boutique” in their name…never thought that would happen.
Citizen Cope is great. OAR is alright, but I agree with most of you that high-schoolers and college kids are more their scene. But Citizen Cope? Check them out if you haven’t heard them.
It is a big pile or dirt, they are essentially putting a slap of concrete and a semi-permanent stage up….what the hell do you guys expect? I know the hipsters on here thought this would lead to Arcade Fire, Grizzly Bear, and LCD soundsystem were going to show up, but damn you guys are picky. Raleigh has never had a great history of booking bands so lets take the positive road. OAR may not be your jam, but there are probably 2 or 3 thousand kids around town that would love to see OAR. These are general interest, medium sized acts, just be happy they are booking at a reasonable level. The funniest thing is, you don’t have to buy tickets, thats the best part. Here’s to hoping for 20 or 30 shows between May and Pigskin season, and that at least 25% appeal to you hipster jackals on here.
Who are the ad wizards that came up with this one?
it’s not named the “boutique” anything. it’s being described as a boutique amphitheatre and some people have taken that as its name. in reality it hasn’t been named yet. also, in reality it doesn’t matter what they name it, someone will hate the name, hate the bands, hate the noise, hate the crowds, hate that it’s free, hate that there aren’t more shows, hate that blah blah you get it.
Exactly. Why can’t we just be happy we have something new? I look forward to outdoor shows downtown. Isn’t that reason enough to be happy about it? I’m personally sick of Tom Petty, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Bret Michaels and all the rest, but I don’t crap all over the people that go to those shows. I’d love it if my favorite bands came to town, but they usually don’t.
Amen Matt
This amphitheatre, regardless of its name, is first and foremost a business and towards that end Paramore, Tegen & Sara and O.A.R. will put butts in seats (or on lawn as the case may be). I won’t be going to either of these shows but I understand why they were booked and hopefully they will eventually book bands that I would like to go see.
Rainbow Sandals!
well said hackles. i agree wholeheartedly with your post but i did notice that you have a spelling error in the last sentence. i think you typed an ‘L’ where an ‘S’ belongs…right after hipster…
^^^^^^Tito, I think its more than just being described as “boutique”. They updated the facebook page to include the work boutique and I have seen the name in several writeups. Its very cheezy but maybe it will stick.
FYI idiots - there will be other bands coming to this venue. this is only the first lineup. don’t like it, don’t go. other, different bands will come and play music. thats how these things work.
too bad this isn’t part of the april fool’s jokes
O.A.R is a solid band. Grew in popularity through their own grassroots efforts and went to Ohio State. Go Bucks!
Tegan and Sara and Citizen Cope rock too. Nice, chill shows. Looking forward to ‘em.
Backstreet blows. Paramore is a great live act. Citizen Cope is alright. OAR is complete horseshit, and I don’t hate “jam/college boy” music. OAR is easily one of the less qualified bands, when it comes to songwriting anyway, to play. Get ALO or effing John Mayer even. Heaven forbid they bring acts like Vampire Weekend, Ingrid Michaelson, Gold Motel, or Fun to anywhere in NC. Artists famously SKIP NC. You wanna know why? Because of “boutique” amphitheaters, boat shoes and bob haircuts. There are too many Stepford Wives here. And one more thing…in NC “beach music” refers to what the rest of the country calls soul or R&B. The term “beach music” in the rest of the f*cking world refers to bands like the Beach Boys. Raleigh could use some promoters/companies/people with some balls and a little vision. And ditch the boat shoes boys and girls…we’re not a coastal city.
Your favorite band sucks.
Vampire Weekend played Asheville…NC…back in April. Ingrid Michaelson is playing Raleigh…NC…in June.
Johnny you dont know anything except how to type do ya?....

Beach music, also known as Carolina beach music, is a regional genre which developed from various musical styles of the forties, fifties and sixties. These styles ranged from big band swing instrumentals to the more raucous sounds of blues/jump blues, jazz, doo-wop, boogie, rhythm and blues, reggae, rockabilly and old-time rock and roll. Beach music is closely associated with the style of swing dance known as the shag, or the Carolina shag, which is also the official state dance of both North Carolina and South Carolina. Recordings with a 4/4 “blues shuffle” rhythmic structure and moderate-to-fast tempo are the most popular music for the shag, and the vast majority of the music in this genre fits that description.
