The City of Raleigh Solid Waste Services Department and Wake County will hold a one-day-only compost bin sale on Saturday, May 7 at the old Super K-Mart, 4121 New Bern Ave., from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. This waste-reduction event is being held in celebration of Compost Awareness Week; May 1 through May 7. Free composting sessions will be offered by a master gardener periodically throughout the day.

Composting is a great way to limit the amount of organic matter/food that you throw into your trash each day. And, it is an easy way to create very rich organic fertilizer for any plants you plan on putting in the ground in future seasons.

If you are unfamiliar with composting, this is your chance to get a composter for your yard for a good price and get some tips about the details that go into letting your food rot and turning it back into soil for your yard, garden, plants or whatever else you decide to use it for.

The City will sell 11 cubic foot capacity FreeGarden Earth compost bins for $45 (typically sold from $70-120) along with kitchen collection containers, aerators and thermometers. Everything you need for a percentage of the price you'll pay elsewhere.

Location: Former Super Kmart parking lot off Business 64.

Check out the city's website for more information.

Note: you can also make your own compost bin at home for much cheaper than buying the plastic container, but for those of you living in areas with small yards, pesky neighbors or worried about animals these are the best for you (for the price).
