Construction has been moving forward on the Fayetteville Street Plaza in downtown Raleigh since October 2008 and is slated to be finished by October 2009. When completed, it will tie together the Progress Energy Center with the State Capitol Building. It’s hard to get a good view of what’s going on inside the barricades from the street, but luckily the city is posting updated aerials (like the one above) on their website.
It looks like the pavilions bases are in and many of the new planters in place as well. I like the space on the public side of the fence where you can still see the original pavers in place. Maybe they should leave a bit of this area for the palimpsest effect, especially considering the fact that Raleigh loves erasing much of its history.

What’s the story with Charter Square? I have heard rumors that the project is slowing down, and I noticed one of the large cranes was dismantled about a week ago.
The side closest to the BofA building was filled in and has 1 floor done above ground, now it seems like they are working on the other half of the structure to fill the 4 stories below street level. Does appear to be slowing down though. I hope this project stays on track!
Rumor has it that the parking structures will be completed and then construction will be halted until a sufficient number of anchor businesses are identified as tennants. I seem to remember hearing that there were two anchor tennants signed up and the construction company needed one more to complete the financing.
With that said, I really hope Charter Square is a non-smoking building. Otherwise I will not consider entering it. LOL
I think my grand children or maybe great grand children may enjoy it since I probably won’t be alive by the time its slow progress is complete.
Arthur, are you talking about Charter Square? or City Plaza?
City Plaza seems to be moving along just fine…so I am sure you will be able to enjoy it along with your children….and compared to some of the other non government projects that are 100% stalled, I think we should applaud the development of Charter Square!
Using the word “palimpsest” in this article makes my day.
Someone needs to get back to his studio work…
The part I most look forward to is being able to walk from the Capital to Memorial Auditorium in a nice continuous straight line! ![]()
I hope it’s non-smoking.
