The N&O has a writeup in today’s paper about the new city plaza at the South end of Fayetteville Street. In the article, they discuss many of the art pieces that will be featured in the plaza as well as the fact that Jimmy John’s is the only tenant to sign up for one of the pavilions. But…...there is hope on the horizon. The article also states that two more tenants will be announced soon. The article hints around Fayetteville Street’s need for more retail. Could there be retail in FaySt’s future? It’s likely to be more restaurants, but let’s hope so.
The plaza started construction in October 2008 and is slated to be finished by October 2009,
Raleigh Wide Open 2009 will be on October 24, 2009 and will help open the new downtown Fayetteville Street plaza.
As well, Plaza Cafe is said to be open for business now in the Progress Energy Center.

Fayetteville Street Development City Plaza
I’d like to talk to whoever is trying to sabotage growth of the downtown area by calling the two spots with the most potential “GloSo” and “FaySt”... This is not cool, seriously.
Still disappointed in this lackluster, boring plan. Maybe when it’s done it will be better than nothing, but gee, the city really let the ball drop on this. All the best (trying to keep a positive spin on it)! But really, who would want to be located on a public plaza, besides a cafe or food outlet?
No one care to mention Charter Square is stalled? City Plaza will look so pretty from that nice giant slab of concrete of what was Charter Square!
All 4 “light towers” are up now.
Charter Square needs to get a move on, it will help that block more than 4 kiosks, 4 light towers, and a water fountain!
The light towers are unattractive and completely out of context. But that was obvious when they first chose the artist. Comfort: better than nothing? Perhaps.
It annoys the hell out of me that there is not symmetry w/ this plaza. Pavilion #2’s position should be further to the left in the above photo. For the life of me it just looks so out of place where it is.
And then Raleigh looked around and realized that Durham was the cool 21st century destination.

Not after dark.
That lack of symmetry is extremely annoying, but hopefully not as apparent from ground level.

Yeah…I’m in Durham everyday and I don’t really see where this idea comes from. But back to the plaza - yeah the symmetry is messed up, and the towers are cheesy, but I’ll reserve judgment until the entire project is complete.
I’m in Durham everyday too these days and I’m talking about the DPAC, Bulls Stadium, tobacco district, Main St. eating and new retail, walkable streets and a blend of new and old architecture. Whether it be condos in the Kress building or the new bus station. I live in DTR but Raleigh needs to wake up.
Those of us who have actually seen the plaza from ground level will notice that the east side pavilions are aligned with the BoA Building while the west side pavilions are aligned with the BB&T Building, thereby providing the “required” symmetry. The light towers, which of course are not finished yet so it would be difficult to draw a conclusion on their appearance, are centered on the plaza.
I think Charter square will get a move on once this is finished and F street is FINALLY a whole street again
