At Mayor Meeker’s State of the City Address two weeks ago, he proposed a new schedule for funding Lightner and removed remote operations centers from the immediate priorities. In doing that, property tax increases were brought down to just two half cent increases starting 2012. As the Fed hints at rising interest rates in the near future, securing funding now, could save the city as much as 50 million dollars.
In the midst of politicizing this issue, the folks who are left in limbo are our public safety services. Currently in cramped, outdated and dispersed facilities the services are running at reduced efficiency. The police force is currently divided between downtown and their Six Forks station, this division results in lots of unecessary back and forth for the officers going to the court house and the central station.
