Back in April, New Raleigh published photographs and the details of the North Carolina Museum of Art Expansion. Though a work in progress, it was evident that the vision presented in the initial renderings were being quickly realized. With the expansion in the home stretch now, the museum is preparing to close its doors to the public and get their space in order.
Visitors have a month to see their favorite works of art before the North Carolina Museum of Art building temporarily closes beginning Monday, September 7, for approximately seven months. The grand opening of the Museum expansion, a new 127,000-square-foot gallery building for the permanent collection, is scheduled for mid-April 2010.
The Museum Park will remain open and Museum on the Move, a series of lectures, films, concerts, family programs, and other offerings, will keep the public engaged.

North Carolina Museum Expansion
I cannot wait for the new space to open!!! This is going to be a phenomenal addition to an already great museum. It’s funny how surprised people are that Raleigh has such a really great collection of fantastic art… God, I love that place!!!
I’m still a little curious about the natural lighting and how this may affect the artwork. Are the paintings going to end up looking like the movie boxes near the front window of Blockbuster?
I was reading something that the Museum published a while back about the natural lighting - there are screens in many of the rooms that will filter out the UV rays and such, as well as allow for less or more natural lighting, depending on the art…
Its only UV rays that will damage art; there are various glazings that have active or passive (OR BOTH!) UV filtering capabilities.
Smitty - I was just in Chicago and went to the Art Institutes museum (which has an amazing collection), and the new section of it has a lot of natural lighting, but I was told theres a way to keep out the harmful ‘rays’.
I hope they get their funding squared away. I haven’t been back since they kept closing exhibits/halls/floors without notice.
I’m really looking forward to seeing the new stuff.
I hope it all works out. I still think the new building looks cheap and like they cut corners. Bad, bad design excluding the lighting issues.
Are they building a museum or public self storage? I’m sure its functional but after witnessing it from the road today, I give it my vote as the ugliest attraction in Raleigh.
