Crumb and Coffee Coming to Downtown Raleigh

More Information about the opening of Crumb and Coffee in Downtown Raleigh

Above is the formula for success. Presently, this is a theoretical formula, but in a few weeks time, this theory will be tested in Downtown Raleigh.

The equation states that if you add two ingredients that used to mix in one location, transport them to another location with a bit more flare, you will get a combination that is simply irresistible.

The first ingredient is Carrie Gephart, who was the baker at Hayes Barton Cafe (ahem, best dessert in town) in Five Points for many years. She now runs a small dessert operation called Crumb which currently only entertains special orders.

The second is Rich and Ty of Third Place fame. Five Points alumni also. The two are back together again making what they are calling the “best coffee drinks in downtown”.  Carrie, Ty and Rich are mixing up their own ingredients as we speak. The cupcake and coffee wars are about to heat up in the downtown grid.

This is going to be a fantastic combination and to quote Ty, “more news forthcoming on a need to know basis…and you will need to know.” So indeed, stay tuned for more detailed news in the coming week.

Check out Crumb on Twitter and their blog.

    Here comes trouble. DELICIOUS trouble.

  • RaleighRob11/24 08:20 AM

Interesting.  Five or so years ago, this news would have excited me greatly.  Now I’m more like a tad bit concerned…can downtown Raleigh support two cupcake shops (plus the other dessert places)?  Can it support yet another coffee shop?  Crossing my fingers….

  • Leigh11/24 08:36 AM

From Crumb’s web site - “So good it makes fat people cry.”  Really?  They felt the need to go there?

Well I certainly won’t go there - to Crumb, that is.

  • dave11/24 08:55 AM

Bring it on.  The other cupcake store isn’t very good.  Can Raleigh support another coffee shop downtown?  Well, this looks like it’s going to be a coffee/cupcake shop, so yes.  Making fat people cry and now making them stay up all night.

  • Sunshine11/24 09:01 AM

So excited about this trio coming together. Great ideas and energy from some of Raleigh’s best local supporters. Can’t wait to see the outcome.

  • Jenn11/24 09:05 AM

Crumb’s slogan “So good it makes fat people cry” Wow. I don’t think I’m going to support that regardless of who’s making the coffee. I think that’s absolutely disgraceful and tasteless.

  • hackles1011/24 09:49 AM

Jenn and Leigh, using the internet to be awful soleless, no-fun people since November 24, 2009!

If you are staying away from a place because of that slogan, Im fairly certain they don’t want you, your negativity, your attitudes, or your business within a country mile of their business!

  • richardfoc11/24 10:07 AM

“Crumb: So Good It Makes Uptight People Whine”

  • Dean11/24 10:29 AM

I’m one of those fat people, am not offended in the slightest, and am looking forward to crying soon.

  • uncwgirl7711/24 10:33 AM

Personally, I am going to go check this place out just because of their slogan: “So good it makes fat people cry.” I love it! Leigh & Jenn need to NOT be so sensitive. And, I am glad that I won’t be running into them there———they seem like real buzz killers.

  • willard11/24 10:33 AM

I’m fat. Crumb brings the thunder. Get over it.

  • uncwgirl7711/24 10:47 AM

BTW——I’ll be sure to bring tissues when I visit. And, I will be happy to share with whoever needs them.

  • Bill11/24 10:54 AM

I’m not overly sensitive.  The slogan repels me because I don’t want to get fat.  I suggest: “Tastes better than skinny feels.”  As though it will conquer my manorexia.

  • T-Plain11/24 10:56 AM

I’ll go there simply to flaunt the fact that I can fit through the door.

  • richardfoc11/24 11:03 AM

You might fit in…good luck getting out.

  • Zach11/24 11:11 AM

Nice to see (from their blog) that they plan on catering to folks with special dietary concerns (like Celiac Disease a.k.a. Gluten Free).

  • blzbub11/24 11:12 AM

Fat people got no reason to live.

  • Sal11/24 11:22 AM

Wow. Don’t call a fat person fat, even though THEY ARE.

You know, they might get hurt at someone pointing out the obvious.

  • Chubby Chaser11/24 11:38 AM

    Where the fat women at?

  • dt11/24 12:23 PM

I love the slogan, as a big guy myself, it doesn’t offend me in the least, but I guess that makes me one of the few non-uptight people that frequent NR these days.

  • Rick11/24 02:37 PM

Sounds like Jenn and Leigh are uptight fatties.

  • TheWaveLife11/24 02:54 PM

As an hourglass-figured woman myself, I love cupcakes and coffee and calisthenics! Everything in moderation wink

  • JeffS11/24 03:13 PM

    Sigh… cupcakes? Really?

Way to jump on a worn-out fad.

  • Chubby Chaser11/24 04:10 PM

Jenn and Leigh… Holla at me.

  • bcb11/24 07:52 PM

Jeff5 is on the right track.  Where about to be in the 2010’s cupcakes are so very turn of the century…  What Raleigh needs is someone to expand our culinary/confectionary stomachs and minds.

  • Jennifer11/24 08:23 PM

I have never ordered from Crumb—do they only do cupcakes?  I know cupcakes are in the photo and are mentioned in the post, but “desserts and coffee” would suggest something broader.  Agree with the need to broaden culinary perspective, but I am in support of local home grown (and quality) businesses bringing more support downtown…

  • buffalo bill11/24 09:23 PM

It rubs the lotion on its skin or else it gets the hose again.

  • Anonymous11/25 06:12 AM

OK. Here’s the thing. Being fat is not always a choice. There’s this thing called “compulsive overeating.” It’s like alcoholism but instead of craving alcohol, you crave large amounts of unhealthy food. Sometimes it also involves anorexia and/or bulimia. Now, people have the right to make fun of whatever they want. I’d probably laugh (a little bit) if a new bar opened downtown with the slogan, “so good it’ll make alcoholics cry.” It’s just interesting that, unlike with, say, race or sexual orientation, most people assume obesity (and even anorexia and bulimia) are moral failings, chosen by the people who suffer them. How would this board react if the above posters said, “Black people got no reason to live” or suggested that being offended by gay-bashing was somehow “uptight?” Don’t get me wrong; I get the humor. It’s just that, as a compulsive overeater myself, I sometimes feel like it’s our culture’s last acceptable scapegoat. It always feels good to point out “the other.” Just sayin’. Flame away.

  • Anonymous11/25 06:22 AM

Oh, and as for the folks posting who are kinda owning their fatness or whatever, more power to you. That’s obviously not who I’m talking about. I’ll get out of the way now…

  • Anonymous11/25 06:25 AM

And I know it’s a Randy Newman song. Goodnight.

  • Harry Seaward11/25 09:07 AM

fat people are the last segment of society we can still make fun of.  please don’t take that away from me.

btw, i love how stuff like this always outs the fatties.  i’m looking in your direction jenn and leigh!

  • JeffS11/25 10:56 AM

Moral failing? I’ve never heard that before. Ok, I take it back. Some idiot preacher somewhere is probably preaching about gluttony right now.

Whatever. For most people, it’s a choice. And those with a medical condition… well, historically natural selection would take care of them. Now we prefer to protect and celebrate our genetic mutations.

So… as long as you’re staying fat, you might as well skip the MickyD’s and support your local carb pushers right? Even if they can’t come up with something more original than cupcakes.

When is someone going to open up a decent bakery in Raleigh? Real, as in something between the almost entirely bread, and overpriced designer cakes. Small towns all over the state have good traditional bake shops and we have nothing.

  • hackles1011/25 11:17 AM

I can’t wait for a full service bakery to come downtown.  We have plenty of coffee shops and cupcakes.  Maybe Edelweiss cafe will help a bit.

  • bill11/25 11:24 AM

I agree.  A bakery, like Guggelhupf in Durham, would be great.  I’d love a good brioche with my coffee in the morning, not a cupcake.

  • Kate11/25 04:14 PM

I’m sick of this cupcake nonsense and I second the hope that a full-service bakery comes to downtown.  Looking forward to Edelweiss.

  • smitty11/26 01:13 AM

I went to the Cupcake Shoppe and bought a lemon square because that’s the way I roll.

  • britt11/27 02:31 PM

A cupcake is essentially an individual piece of cake with a complementary frosting. CAKE being the main part. Personally don’t like it when a “cake” dessert is all about the frosting. If these cupcakes are about the cake then I’m in. Mmmm good cake and coffee, what could be better!

  • Micah11/27 03:01 PM

I second that, Britt!  I thought I was alone in feeling that a tiny little cupcake with a huge mound of frosting so heavy that the cupcake will barely stand on its own is a little much.  I always have to scrape off nearly all of the frosting.  Personally, a just out of the oven cupcake with NO frosting is hard to beat!

  • Xiaoding11/28 02:36 PM

” It’s just interesting that, unlike with, say, race or sexual orientation, most people assume obesity (and even anorexia and bulimia) are moral failings, chosen by the people who suffer them. “

Go to a mall.  LOOK AT ALL THE FAT WOMEN.  Yeah, THEY ALL HAVE A MEDICAL CONDITION!  Between the ears, that is, they are too stupid to eat right, in an age where information is vomited upon us in endless quantities!

    Really.

  • Daniel11/30 01:49 AM

Certainly a recipe for delicious bakery and coffee.

  • anon01/14 11:11 AM

I don’t think Leigh and Jen are uptight, the slogan is just in poor taste ...and is juvenile.  Personally, I think it’s not smart, either.  If you make a product that is not good for people and will make them fat, perhaps you shouldn’t invoke the image of fat people.  In addition, Crumb will want *everyone* to come: those with a sense of humor and those deemed here as “uptight” so why alientate anyone?  Unless they feel they might have to depend on “bad press is good press”, which, since we’re still talking about it, perhaps it is.

  • anon01/14 11:16 AM

PS.  my brother doesn’t live in the area, and is in what I assume to be Crumb’s target demographic.  I texted him the slogan and he thought I was joking and it wasn’t real.  when he realized it was, he said it was “sorta creepy.”  I wonder if they bothered to test it?
