Sure, we miss details sometimes (and readers would say more often than that), but writing a full article about local art and not even mentioning the artist seems a bit slack.

Over the holiday break, the City of Raleigh errrr.....Wake County has introduced their new 'Respect the Can' campaign to combat litter in the area. The News and Observer did a great job summing up the campaign and its new mascot, Chuck and the Chuck Wagon. The entire campaign revolves around Chuck's image, so it seems that the artist behind Chuck and his wagon would be a large part of the story.

Sadly, this detail was completely left out of the 500 word article so we thought we'd let you in on the 'secret'. The artist behind Chuck is Paul Friedrich, known locally for Onion Head Monster and the Cup of Awesome. Those who know Friedrich's work could recognize his style immediately in the campaign and luckily he's signed his name behind each of the Chuck images, otherwise it may have been lost all together.

Sometimes details fall through the cracks but the artist behind the art of a very influential campaign shouldn't be left by the curb. Art isn't litter, so let's pick up the details and place them where they belong.

Unfortunately, you got it wrong, too. The campaign is not a City of Raleigh initiative, but a Wake County initiative. That’s a pretty big detail, I would say…

Paul Friedrich is definitely someone Wake County can be proud of.  Can’t believe the N&O glossed over him.
