The Atlanta-based band Debutaunts will be playing a show at The Pour House on Thursday, August 26th.  The group is touring to follow up the recent release of their first full length album Why Can’t We Have Fun. Heavily inspired by 60’s pop, with a bit of a new wave, beachy feel to it, the album manages to successfully mix genres, moving effortlessly from a songs boasting a string quarter to others that are more synth and key heavy. Their musical styling has drawn comparisons to the likes of the Strokes and OK Go. “We’re all huge fans of Motown,” said the band’s guitarist, Jonny Shupert. “We’re all fans of some 60s bands - The Beatles and The Beach Boys mostly- and a few 80s bands - The Smiths, Madonna, and Prince.”

While the Debutaunts originated in Gainesville, FL, they crossed paths with the Grammy nominated producer Matt Goldman, who was based out of Atlanta, and their collaboration with him resulted in the release of their first EP, Flowers From Evil, in 2008. Shupert says of the recording: “We were proud of it, but once we were done with it, we were over it. We were listening to a lot of 60’s pop and Motown, and remembered that you can be commercial without being terrible. That inspired us for the next four to five months of songwriting.”

Said songwriting led the band to pack up and relocate to Atlanta, where the group could focus on creating new material for their full length album. On Why Can’t We Have Fun, Shupert, along with lead singer Jazek Creacy, bassist Jeff Margaritondo, and drummer Stephen Santana show their range of influences with a variety of summery power pop tracks. According to Shupert, the band “realized it’s much more difficult to write a really good pop song than to be progressive all the time, so we had that in mind when making the album.  That’s probably the reason why the album sounds like a collection of singles, and also why all the songs are so diverse.  We would write a song of a certain flavor, and then get sick of that flavor and write another song.”

While the band’s popularity and fan base continues to grow with the release of their new album, the Debutaunts still maintain a DIY attitude as can be seen from their simple but fun new video for “This is Yours,” which was shot in their drummer’s bedroom to the tune of about $300.

Debutaunts play at The Pour House this Thursday with local openers Goodbye Providence and Lions at Lunchtime. Tickets are $8.
