Dickey’s Barbeque Pit Now Open in Downtown Raleigh

We mentioned back in August that Dickey’s Barbeque Pit (a national chain) was moving in across from Cooper’s BBQ on East Davie Street. Dickey’s is now open so let us know if you prefer Dickey’s or the hard to beat Downtown Raleigh staple Cooper’s BBQ. We suspect Cooper’s will win out, but those big yellow cups full of soda might be too tempting for some folks.

I’ve eaten at a Dickey’s once.  I felt pretty bad about the whole thing afterward.

i am going to go out on a limb and guess that everyone here will hate it.  there will be some talk about how it doesn’t stack up to other local places, the bbq is too dry or the fried okra wasn’t fresh or the sweet tea was too sweet.  then they will predict that it will be closed in 6 months, hopefully for a better bbq place that only uses local ingredients, has nicer chairs and a less surly wait staff.  then they will pat themselves on the back for a job well done reviewing this new business.

that being said, good luck to ya Dickeys.

For a chain, Dickey’s is pretty good. Polish sausage sandwich FTW. It’s more consistent than The Pit, though I prefer The Pit on a good day.

I’m partial to Cooper’s, but there is room for both.  I like Dickey’s.  Their chairs, on the other hand…

I question the ethics of Progress Energy’s development team on this.  Sure, they want to fill empty retail space. I can appreciate that.

But go back about 5 years and check an N&O article about development on that block (prior to it being labeled the Edison).  Keith Poston (then spokesperson for PE) commented about the looming development project across the street that would include the building Cooper’s is in.  Forgive me while I paraphrase:

“Cooper’s is a Raleigh institution. We’ll make sure we take care of them, and any new projects will be built to include them.”

Fast forward to 2010, and they bring in a BBQ chain across the street?  That’s certainly “taking care” of Cooper’s, right?

You’re kidding me, I canNOT believe Cooper’s is still open. Have any of you people actually EATEN their “food”?! I’ve had their “bbq” probably 10 times since the mid-80’s. It has always been unbelievably greasy, tasteless and almost slimy in consistency. I believe it remains open only because nostalgia has made it an “icon” of Olde Raleigh. I actually walked out on an almost full plate a few years ago when I was downtown and thought “Ok, I’ll give them another chance, maybe in the restaurant it’ll be better than catering.” No chance. So! Dickey’s needs to stand on their own merits, because just competing against the neighbors is definitely not a fair example! Next time I’m downtown Raleigh I’ll give Dickey’s a shot, and no, I won’t need to compare it to any nearby “competition”.

ScottyM, Dickey’s is not competition for Cooper’s.  Cooper’s is barbecue.  Dickey’s is meat slathered in “sauce.”

As for mikey’s criticism, there are indeed days when Cooper’s is not up to snuff.  That’s the nature of working with an entire pig.  With that said, on a good day Cooper’s stands up to anything west of Goldsboro.

The Pit on a good day beats anything else.  On a bad day though…

It’s Cooper’s for me.  Love the people and the food.  Some of the best fried chicken in the area as well.  Yes, there is a day here and there where Cooper’s wasn’t perfect, but overall it’s great and personable.  I’ll take that over a consistently mediocre chain that just dumps sauce over the meat.

Cooper’s is OK.  I love the Brunswick stew, but their alley beats the Waste Management facility on Atlantic on an August day for the most foul smelling place in Raleigh.

I just threw up a little bit thinking about it.

Raised. in Dallas where Dickey’s originated. This franchise is disappointing in the extreme.
    Will not return.
