Dos Taquitos Opens Downtown Location

Dos Taquitos Centro

David and I had a chance on Friday to pop in for a preview lunch at the newest, and soon to be trendiest, lunch spot in downtown Raleigh:  Dos Taquitos Centro

I found out via a tip from a friend that Dos Taquitos was having a soft opening of it’s new downtown location, Dos Taquitos Centro which is located at 106 Wilmington Street.  If you are unaware of the Creedmoor location, cancel any dinner plans you have this week/weekend and change them to reservations here before trying out Centro.   A quirky environment and fantastic food.  I have never been too happy about the service but tend to overlook it relative to the greatness of the previously mentioned items.

The downtown location’s interior isn’t as quirky and interesting as the N. Raleigh restaurant, but so far, the food is definitely on par.  I had a burrito, which had what I described as Lava cheese on it, and David had tacos, of which he exclaimed: “There’s a half of an avacado on here!”.  Both were delicious and the owners were very helpful in talking us through the “walk up to the counter” order style that the restaurant has created.  The restaurant was packed at lunch on Friday and I suspect it will continue that way for a while as more folks in downtown find out about it’s official opening today.

The only downside to the meal was the price for the food on Friday.  We didn’t pay b/c it was free at the soft opening, but had we paid, it would have been a bit pricey for lunch.  The chips and salsa portion was small, especially for $4 and the burrito was also small for the price.  But, the presentation of the food and the quality of the ingredients was outstanding, which, as stated early, both win out.  A very enjoyable experience all around and I will probably return later this week to see the size crowd it carries a couple days into it’s first week.

Dos Taquitos is one of my favorites.  Went there this past Saturday (Creedmoor location) and they had their 16th Year Birthday party—balloons everywhere and lots of dancing with a live band.  A great sight to see in this (what used to be the only) North Raleigh location.

Also, if their mojitos are as good as the ones at the Creedmoor location, you can just skip dinner altogether and grab a drink there!

They’re finally open!  I heard somewhere that they were going to open last January, so the nine months since then have been painful.  I live around the corner, so I’ve been intently watching the progress.  At first I thought they were going to have seating upstairs.  I also assumed that it was going to be the same format as the original.  But they’ve adapted to the downtown lunch routine.  I just ate there and the service was very fast, though not accurate.  The food was pretty good.  But I simply associate Dos Taquitos with candle light, crowded hut-like structures, and the bottle cap mural.  These things were missing.

They’ll begin serving dinner on Thursday, so we’ll see if that feels a little more cozy.

After having been to the other restaurant I was pretty disappointed with this one. They got the order wrong and it was half cold. Next time I’ll go to El Rodeo for free chips and salsa and a fully cooked veggie burrito. Maybe I’ll give Dos Taquitos a shot for dinner sometime…

I went to Dos Taquitos for dinner and loved it!
The food is amazing, more upscale and gourmet while preserving their funky atmosphere…for those who wish this Dos Taquitos looked like the one in North Raleigh, keep in mind that the other one has been around for 16 years and the decor has been a 16 year process…so give it a little bit of time.  Also, I suggested to the owner dimming the lights and she explained they were working on that but they have had some issues getting all that to work smoothly.  So I guess it takes time to get started but they’re surely off to a great start!
