Whatever the official name ends up being, the new Downtown Raleigh Amphitheater construction is underway and now there is a new rendering to go with the site plan that was released earlier this year. The rendering looks very similar to the plan although the stage and seating seem to take up more space on the site than will actually happen (relative to the necessary truck ramp needed for the Convention Center). We’ll call that artistic license to make the space look bigger than it actually will be. Either way, we are stoked about the new outdoor entertainment venue in downtown. And as stated, the bands will definitely have a great view of the Cree Shimmer Wall.
Two shows have been announced at the Amphitheater so far. Paramore and Tegan & Sara will play in July and O.A.R. w/ Citizen Cope in August.

looks great…I’m sure the bands will enjoy the view of the shimmer wall.
With the two decks near by there should be no problem parking and it would get the bands out of the grass at Moores Square or from blocking the street on Fayeville Street.
I’m thinking the sound is going to echo off that shimmer wall quite a bit. I don’t care about it bouncing into the neighborhoods, I just hope it doesn’t ruin the concert sound.
Looks good. I’m very happy to see downtown entertainment destinations expanding beyond the usual spots.
That shimmer wall should make for some goofy acoustics.
Where are the rows of portojohns?
Anyone know if the seats will be permanant or temporary?
Hooray for getting this venue, boo for more kitschy looking junk to further accentuate Downtown Raleigh’s mediocrity.
I agree. Kudos to getting a venue like this downtown. The design + rendering is disappointing however.
As well as my grammar.
yeah, i always though it wasn’t right confining “better than ezra” and “the spin doctors” to moore square.
Another big win for downtown.
Wish they could have done a better design for the stage.
Good Start, my biggest hope is that they continue construction/additions to the site after a successful 1st summer/fall season of concerts!
Whatever happened to that tent/canopy that was supposedly coming from Boston? I guess that was ditched? I’d rather it be open air with a view of the shimmer wall personally.
I agree the stage could be a bit more creative, but I think that looks great. I’m sure it’ll be a bit different.
the city dumped the tent after they realized it would cost as much to fix the free tent as to create the site. Another reason to distrust Live Nation when they’re looking to help you out.
well it looks half ass but i guess it is ok. raleigh needs some much more dense developments dt it looks to much like bedrock… in the stone age!
I remember going to an outdoor concert in Rochester, NY in the early 90’s where they positioned sound devices at various points outside the venue so people could not hang just outside the gates/fences and listen to the show. I wonder if something like that is going to come into play here.
This is Hooey! Look at the rendering. This is nothing more than Walnut Creek II. Overpriced tickets for reserved seating and the “Festival Lawn,” as they call it, is the smallest space. It should be the biggest. No imagination, no originality and a “cookie cutter” design for an outdoor space. I am simply not going pay big bucks to see Eddie Money, Nantucket and G&R cover bands (and drink overpriced beer, wine and (oh so good for the environment) bottled water. Design it right and let the public have some input at a design charrette. That is the way to design a truly “public space.”
Sound Tribe Sector 9 is playing this place 8/26!
paramore will blow the roof off of that place.
This will be a great little venue even if the drunk Johnson County boys will have to cross the street to get to the parking deck and cars!
“Design it right and let the public have some input at a design charrette. That is the way to design a truly “public space.” ”
It’s a concert venue. It needs a stage, a sound system and seats. For something that is going to be torn down eventually this design is practical for its purpose and projected lifespan.
Its too bad the crowd will face away from the shimmer wall, it would have made for an awesome backdrop. Plus the sound bouncing off that thing is probably going to sound horrible.
The shimmer wall will probably be much better than a solid masonry wall, from a sound-reflection perspective. The wall is angled, which is good, and it is comprised of tiny little metal pieces that are secured to the gridwork by tiny little metal hinges. Very little high-frequency sound should be reflected, and a minimal amount of low frequencies.
Should have built a baseball stadium for the Carolina Blue Sox - the MLB team that will exist in 10 years.
who wants to sit down up front in a show? Have you ever heard of dancing? Never liked the idea of chairs at a show! if you need to sit then your probably to fucking old to even be at the show and i didn’t see the beach boys on the line up so bring your own chair to watch your god damn kids. flip the seats and make the lawn up front, or make the chairs moveable. Good idea but a really shitty design. I understand the whole concept of a family oriented facility but who are you trying to fool? look at who you have already booked! It doesn’t really look like a lot of 8 year old kids will show up with their parents to see the legalize it tour 2010 with cypress hill or how about sts9. So you really need to think about who your demographic is and focus on them instead of trying to be nice and neat. keep it simple.
