Downtown Amphitheatre Still Hanging Around

It looks like we still may get a downtown Amphitheatre or “other similar improvement” one day.

The Raleigh City Council voted unanimously to amend a contract with O’Brien Atkins for additional design services for a City-owned site intended to be the future location of a downtown amphitheater. The contract amendment totals $54,215.

O’Brien Atkins is drafting an interim plan for City-owned land just west of the Raleigh Convention Center. The property is bounded by McDowell, Cabarrus, Dawson and Lenoir streets The City is considering a downtown amphitheater or other similar improvement for the land.

The empty lot to the West of The Convention Center would be the best location. Lots of parking in the new decks, ect.

Didn’t the city already purchase the tent/etc for this amphitheater?  I might be crazy but I remember reading something about it a while ago.

We’ve been generating alternative (theoretical) designs for that site in our 1st year Masters of Landscape Architecture studio this semester.  You’re all welcome to come see our results next First Friday (May 1) at our downtown studio on Wilmington (upstairs from Park Raleigh).

^all designs for an ampitheater?  or all sorts of mixed use designs?

DPK - Also heard that the city bought the tarp/tent/covering for an ampitheater from Denver, formerly of Boston.

Why not build something like Charlotte’s NC Music Factory that would be awsome!!

How about something other than another tourist destination.

^I think locals enjoy concerts, parks, aquariums, etc.  What do you propose JeffS?

great idea but you’re bounded on two sides with pretty high traffic flow in dawson and mcdowell.  not a huge deal mind you but something to consider.  the shimmer wall would be a fantastic backdrop, imo.
