Downtown Event Center Closed Again

imageNew Raleigh gets word that The Downtown Event Center, formerly
Raleigh Music Hall, formerly Martin Street Music Hall has once again closed.

The full story is not yet known, but we can say that Downtown Event Center has closed its doors.  Alibi downstairs is still thriving and it looks like the Pizza/Deli place on the first floor has been gaining steam lately.  The already desperate music scene has taken another hit.  There were a couple of great shows that Downtown Event Center put together in their small life span, including The Death Set and Team Robespierre back in March and LTJ Bukem years ago.

Will the Downtown Event Center be missed?  I’m sure it will be to the few folks who actually attended shows there.  But with its wild history, who is to say that it won’t open back up in a couple of months as Half a Block Off Fayetteville Street Music Hall.

I still think it’s one of the best spaces to see live music in the Triangle.  It just needs a little TLC.  Anyone have money, desire and a good booking agent?

    yo,

I was a pretty good booking agent!  haha…show me some TLC.

Jay Reatard, Rosebuds, Double Negative, Future Islands, Birds of Avalon, Death Set, Team Robespierre, NonCanon, The Spin Doctors (don’t tell anyone), Sole, The T’s, HEALTH, Colossus, Thunderlip, Blue Cheer, U2, Mary J. Blige…..

A good booking agent can’t save a place that’s finances and attendance history just aren’t there.

Fond memories of Half a Block Off Fayetteville Street Music Hall including an ankle that still hasn’t totally healed, as well as awful advice from a bartender I’ve seen only once at Alibi.

Her - Bukem is playing upstairs tonight.
    Me - LTJ Bukem??
Her - *snarky reply* No, they’re just called Bukem.

So I trusted it and didn’t go check it out.  I’m still kicking myself.

Well, I wanted to wait to comment on the black hole that is 14 W Martin Street.  But I can’t!

First, Kings would not operate there.  For one thing, Kings wants a restaurant to go along with the club.  And I don’t know if they had a pizza place in mind (or maybe they do).  Second, the three founders of Kings have so much on their plate otherwise that I would be amazed if they have anytime to figure out where to resurrect Kings.  Paul is on tour all the time with BOA, Steve plays in two bands, works full time and is getting married.  I haven’t seen Ben in a long while, so I have no idea what’s going on with him.  I know he’s got a job and a family, so that can keep anyone busy.

Secondly, that flight of stairs has got to go.  Any band will tell you how much that place would benefit from an elevator.  At least to load in!  I don’t think Steve, Paul or Ben would want touring bands to go through that.  I don’t think anyone would!  A club should be convenient for those that play there and go there.

As far as booking, there are a lot of ins and outs as far as that goes.  Mike, if a few harmful words are said about your booking abilities, let sleeping dogs lie.  Many more things are known and could be said by many other people.  For one thing, many people I know complained that shows were never promoted properly.  Booking a show and promoting are two different things.  Just because you book a good show doesn’t mean everyone and their mother will show up.  You said it yourself, in a manner of speaking…. “A good booking agent can’t save a place that’s finances and attendance history just aren’t there.“

As far as finances go, that is another dog that needs to be left alone.

Everyone complains about Kings being gone and the best thing you can do is adopt places like Slims, Double Down, Pour House, house shows, anywhere, and support them.  I think the Pour House can be a really cool place for shows.  So, if there’s a band you love and you think they would draw a crowd, suggest something!  Shit, make a flier for it, get on the radio, leave shit on peoples cars, do anything to get the word out…

If anyone had the money they probably wouldn’t open a club.  They’d just chill at the beach.

    Mike, Vince….

My final statement about a good booking agent wasn’t directed at anyone but the future owner of <em>Half a Block off Fayetteville Street Music Hall<em>.  AKA, these three things are key to anyone who would want to open up a new venue there.

Mike, you were a great booking agent, one of the main reasons DEC made it as long as it did I’m sure.  But, I do agree with Vince that the promoting of the shows and the lack of web presence hurt the DEC very much.

Mike, just so you know, I’m not trying to be malicious or anything.  If you feel that I am, you got my email and number.  We can talk like real adults and not have some lame comment war.  Peace.

  • Dan R05/01 01:51 PM

Please let me know where the Earth show is going to be as I have been waiting umteen years to see this band.

  • Mike Dillon05/01 03:50 PM

I was just kidding.  Im not pissed off.  I put that I booked U2 and Mary J Blige in my comment.  Everyone knows what was up with that place.  Actually, truth be told, Vince made flyers for me.  I mean thats someone who needs to be commended.  I just sent off emails and phone calls.  I am waiting to book for a club that has the right tools.  After Kings, Bickett and DEC I’m beginning to think I should take a break.

EARTH IS AT KATMANDU ON SAT.  TIX ARE 10$.  DES ARK AND HORSEBACK SHOULD BE OPENING UP.  ILL UPDATE ON THAT LATER.  IT IS 18 and up.  PLEASE SPREAD THE WORD!!!!

KATMANDU WAS THE ONLY PLACE THAT I COULD GET ON SUCH SHORT NOTICE, PLEASE COME SHOW SUPPORT!!!!

  • Vince Carmody05/01 06:25 PM
