Hey! DTR Gets Another Parking LOT

Hey! DTR Gets Another Parking LOT

It's the city's asphalt

Just when you thought downtown Raleigh was actually starting to lower the number of open lots in the urban grid, guess what? We’re actually adding more.

First, there was a building on the site that had some decent modern sensibilities and seemed to be functioning adequately. Then came The Hillsborough/Reynolds Tower proposal, which was going to add to the density of the outer edge of the downtown grid. Therefore, the existing building was demolished. A huge hole was dug. Water filled it and it sat empty (except for the mud and water) for a couple of years.

Alas, the Reynolds tower stalled because of the “unusual economy” and just this week the city council voted to pave over the mud and create a parking lot for the Campbell Law School across the street.

Just think, now when sitting outside at the Borough, not only can you stare at a huge parking deck on one side and cars zooming through the red light 5 feet away from your chairs, you also get a parking lot to stare at that will most likely be empty at night. Bummer.

I tend to be an eternal optimist, so as much as I’d like to see a skyscraper/grocery store/architectural wonder/any other fun pipe dream, I do prefer a parking lot to a mud-filled hole in the ground surrounded by covered fencing. Hopefully it’s just a temporary solution, and on the plus side, we’ll finally be able to use the sidewalk along Dawson again.

^yeah, anytime a construction project is delayed, the city should require the fencing be moved back to allow sidewalk use, at least until work can start again.  There’s no sense in keeping it blocked if nothing is going on.

And I bet the Campbell Law students will make a huge stink whenever they do decide to build something there…

I’m hoping Campbell buys that land and builds on it.

I think the lot is still for sale.  Aren’t they just paving it to make a little parking revenue until someone buys the land?  If so, I don’t see the problem with that.

How about a park that would perpetuate its own permanence?

    Thanks Alice!

I could also add, it would make sense to spend cash on a park than screw up historic Moore Square.

Also, Reynolds should be footing the bill for anything done…every cent.

Id rather see it as a parking lot for a few years than a mud hole.  At least its not a parking deck.  In that case, we would definitely have something to cry about.  I dont think it will be too long before that lot gets a decent proposal.  Its a prime spot, thats for sure.

Hell yeah!  More parking space for downtown!  What a great way to spend some money!

    /sarcasm.

Does that mean we can park there at night, too? It would be a closer stumble from The Borough and no steps!!
