Just when you thought downtown Raleigh was actually starting to lower the number of open lots in the urban grid, guess what? We’re actually adding more.
First, there was a building on the site that had some decent modern sensibilities and seemed to be functioning adequately. Then came The Hillsborough/Reynolds Tower proposal, which was going to add to the density of the outer edge of the downtown grid. Therefore, the existing building was demolished. A huge hole was dug. Water filled it and it sat empty (except for the mud and water) for a couple of years.
Alas, the Reynolds tower stalled because of the “unusual economy” and just this week the city council voted to pave over the mud and create a parking lot for the Campbell Law School across the street.
Just think, now when sitting outside at the Borough, not only can you stare at a huge parking deck on one side and cars zooming through the red light 5 feet away from your chairs, you also get a parking lot to stare at that will most likely be empty at night. Bummer.
