Downtown Raleigh Graffiti

The Boylan Bridge Angry Man got people stirring, so what about these two new versions of graf that popped up over the weekend in downtown?

Graffiti is something of a touchy issue in many metropolitan cities across the country and world. We all have our different opinions, but I can assume everyone will agree that these two tags are very poorly executed. Gotta love the spelling of “Raligh.”

Both are located on Martin Street, one on the parking deck that will soon be demolished to make way for the new justice center, and the other a block away. Speculation could run wild on both instances, especially considering they are surrounding the (sadly) soon-to-be-demolished Garland Jones Building.

Apparently spelling is overrated as well.

Maybe Raleigh would suck less if they knew how to spell it.

You should post actual graffiti found around raleigh (like the one at corner of hargett and boylan) rather than some scrawls a bum did.

Maybe Raleigh would suck less if people didn’t scribble all over it.

I’m guessing most of us can agree that the above two examples are just trashy and ugly and don’t have anything artistic about them.  The debate on the angry man graffiti showed that this is a slippery slope because some people felt it was artistic and therefore more acceptable.

The more I thought about that angry man, the more I became an angry man.  All of these are illegal and are disrespectful towards the owners of the buildings, our city, and it’s citizens.  Even if you feel that it’s artistic or an improvement over what was there, I really hope Newraleigh doesn’t do what brion rebarn suggests and start posting graffiti.  It’s just giving a showcase for this stuff.  If you go to that angry man’s website, you’ll see that the tagger clearly does it for the reaction (they even posted negative comments from this site there).  Why support that?

One more thing… To be fair, that tagger who did the angry man does indeed have a lot of talent.  To get up there and be able to paint is impressive.  We could all be better off if they had used that talent towards something we could all enjoy.  Just play by the rules, that’s all.
