Dressed for Town: “Goodbye, Winter”

Dressed for Town: “Goodbye, Winter”

This month, Raleigh downtowners are pulling out all their fur, hats, and leather for one last cold weather salute before the temperature rises.

The girl's fur in the top photo caught my eye. While a full-on fur coat would seem out of place in a North Carolina winter, a touch of fur on a collar strikes me as tasteful. Fur was big this winter with a new demographic: young, style-conscious women who are suddenly recalling the Margot Tenenbaum appeal, but go to eBay for second-hand items instead of their great-grandmother's furrier.

I like this subtle touch she has added; it feels romantic, charming, and consistent with the current overtly ladylike trend.

It's nice to see these guys mixing neutrals. So many people still hang onto their mother's rules—no black with brown, no navy with black—which don't apply to modern dress.

If the traditional aesthetic is what you're going for, however, by all means keep to the codes. Men: matching your watch band to your belt gets you bonus points.

These two really seem to jive off one another. Not that two people who love each other need to prove it by wearing matching pro-shop attire or coordinating his tie with her dress, but when their styles complement, they give a little window into their life together. And that's not something you can force.

I appreciate when a guy is daring enough to accessorize. And leather goes with everything.

Photos were taken one night at Kings.

Is it really fair to say “hits the streets” when the only place you go is Kings/Neptunes?

i’m gunna hafta agree with G’s comment…thats not hitting the streets…that’s hitting one venue on one street.

I am going to miss cold weather.  But I heartily welcome the warmer spring season of women that are excited to be trashier and less clothed.

the second picture looks like shots from a “strange brew” sequel.

This is just comical.  I wouldn’t wear one single thing pictured, but that’s just me (and 95% of Raleigh).  Matching your watch with your belt is good advice, though.

Really? A few shot at Neptunes and that considered fashion - can this blog do more to retard the scene here in Raleigh!

I like the outfits, but what would really pull things together for the girl in pic2 would be a pearl necklace.

Instead of complaining for the sake of complaining, let me give the author some well meaning criticism:

    1) Full body shots with the subject either looking at your or at least aware they’re having their picture taken makes it a lot easier to see the full outfit and how everything works together. In the last shot especially it just looks like a DJ promo shot with a fashion critique
    2) Like other people said, stake out different venues. Calling this a sample of Raleigh is kind of disingenuous, especially considering the fact that Neptune’s isn’t exactly a place you dress up for, unless you want sweat and PBR to ruin your outfit.
    3) Check out other fashion blogs like Hel-Looks, LookBook and The Sartorialist. While LookBook is user-submitted, Hel-Looks and The Sartoirialist are both “on the street” type fashion along the same lines as what you seem to be going for.

Love the idea of New Raleigh monitoring our fashion scene, especially after seeing Raleigh Denim in so many boutiques in Philly this weekend!

To add to what Lara said above, I would also recommend It?s My Darlin?, which is a Seattle [street] fashion blog. I see what you?re going for, but I think It?s My Darlin? would be an excellent reference to give you an idea of what a street fashion column can look like.

Although the looks shown here are definitely more along a hipster side, that doesn’t make them less than fashionable. Raleigh isn’t exactly known for being a mecca for all roads fashion, (or really any road fashion).  I think it is good to see highlights of some glimpses of what fashion could be in Raleigh.  I do agree with Lara and M though, it needs to be cleaned up as a post.

Attention men: You are men. If you find yourself wearing clothing/accessories an 11 year old girl would wear, it is time to reevaluate your life.

Btw, that guy is wearing rings. I just wanted to make sure that was clear. Can this hipster fad end now please?

fad or fashion?  i see no difference.  constructing a look means communicating personality, and there’s no crime in reflecting a popular trend.  and even if you’re not feeling a certain style, wearing garments of any kind sure beats walking around naked! (particularly when it’s chilly)  so leave the bitchy judgment from middle school behind.  have fun!  do yo thang

Heh. Your comment made me think of myself more as the Big Lebowski talking to the Dude rather than middle school student…

“Your revolution is over, Mr. Lebowski. Condolences. The bums lost. My advice is to do what your parents did; get a job, sir. The bums will always lose. Do you hear me, Lebowski?”

But hey, if this is all ‘do what you feel’, sounds good to me. Being unhip, i just have a hard time finding clothes.
