Today at approximately 1:58pm five to ten seconds of ground tremors where felt and heard across Raleigh. The tremors are the ripple effect of a 5.8 (upgraded to) 5.9 magnitude earthquake with its epicenter near Mineral Virginia, near Charlottesville (150 miles NE of Raleigh). The quake was felt from the Triangle are all the way up to NYC. The National Weather Service advises minor tremors may be possible for the next six hours.
CBS News is reporting that North Carolina had evacuations but confirmation of that from state government has not been recieved.
Closer to the epicenter, windows shattered and other minor damage was inflicted. Reports from the Epicenter have not surfaced yet. The quake was strong enough in Washington D.C for the White House to be evacuated. Here, many people didn't notice it happened. Colorado also had a 5.3 magnitude earthquake this morning, its largest in 40 years.
Dear Hurricane Irene, Raleigh had a massive tornado and now an Earthquake in 2011. Please spare us. #2011apocalypse
More as this story develops.
What did you experience when the tremors hit Raleigh today?
ABC Video of White house:
Downtown Raleigh Weather Earthquake
I thought someone in my house was having mind blowing sex. I was jealous.
I was canning peaches here on the farm in Bahama, NC and felt the tremors - was in complete disbelief, after moving from San Francisco I thought that was all behind me!
Felt it for about 10 seconds in Holly Springs. The cats are freaked out, but otherwise nothing to report.
In the Oakwood area of Downtown (exactly where the tornado passed through), we thought our washing machine was off balance, went up to check and then it stopped at the same time that the tremor stopped. We assumed earthquake. Asked our yard guy, who was smoking a cigarette in his truck did he feel it. He said that he got out of his truck because he thought someone was outside of his truck shaking it. ha!
LOCUSTS!
Derpquake
I was in a massage chair and thought the circuits were exploding.
Quake and hurricane in one week…WTF?
Also in Oakwood. It was really alarming. I was on the phone. My cat and I both felt it right away, and it went on for a long while. I live on the second floor of a 1910 house and was home. I had some weird idea that either the neighbors were doing something really crazy or that there was some madman in the closet causing serious trouble. I was describing it all to the person on the phone. I never even thought “earthquake,” which is ridiculous now that I think about it. The shaking kept going on for probably 4-5 minutes. I could feel it while sitting on my couch. So could my cat. She looked so pissed at me.
I didn’t feel a thing. Clearly, it takes more than a little earthquake to shake this girl.
This earthquake sucked. Raleigh used to have real earthquakes with character. Now there are just these yuppy quakes. I’m moving to Johnston County.
Sounded like a freight train! Wait, never mind.
You know you have made it in life when a hipster stalks you around message boards. Too many pyro’s in Johnston county burning down houses to move there. FYI, I have never said I liked Raleigh better before, that was my clone.
Will, you are the ‘hipster’ here.
You are Mr New Raleigh.
